    Hi,

Has anyone on here done the medical for the Army cadets? If so, what exactly do they check?

I am worried about the eye test. I have good eyesight (better in one eye than the other) but I had an operation to correct a squint before I started primary school. Would this have any effect on passing the medical?

if it was a laser operation then they say it disqualifies you from the competition.
"Applicants who have had previous incisional or laser treatment to correct visual accuity are excluded from eligibility"
If i were you i just wouldnt mention it.

    When is your preliminary interview?

No, it wasn't laser surgery. it wasn't actually surgery on the eye at all but on the small muscles beside it.

    my interview is next week

ive had the same op and was taklin to defense stand at one of those career shows. basically any laser treatment or surgery which leaves scars ya cant apply, but that op isnt either so ya dont have to worry bout it. Just say nothin.

All the best with it :)

Hey just back from my Fitness there in Baldonel and boy was it tough. :D they made us run 2 miles around this runway instead of 1 and a half and at the end of it i felt like i had blood in my lungs i was so ****ed lol, but i came in 6th out of 22 with a time of 9mins 8 seconds which isint bad considering i smoke and all that.

I was really pissed off at the pressups too because i always do them properly, chest right to the ground and my body kept rigid. Then i looked over and everyone else was barely dipping at all and then some of them were saying 'Oh i id 46 how many did you do'? and i only did 29 but if i had done them that way i could have done way more  ;)

Have to go for my pelimenary interview on the 19th now, anyone know what that entails? Aircore center looks cool though i reckon id like to get the cadetship so hopefully!

Also a total of 500 hundred were called for fitness out of all applicants and they are looking for 15 cadets. Does anybody else have to go for a fitness for it and can anybody tell me if you do get into it do you get to go parachuting??? lol

    Gluck ;)

vengeance52 - thanks for the info. Are you going for it this year?

mind_problems - well done on doing 2 miles in 9mins 8 seconds, thats a very good time. Did anyone fail it? It's a bit strange that they made you do 2 miles instead of 1.5 though.

The ones who were barely dipping in their press ups might find that the 46 they did don't all count. I was told they all had to have correct form, have the body kept rigid and go down to a fists width above the ground before going back up.

I'd say you would go parachuting at some stage.

over 20km......that is damn fast when you think about it!

Was it definitely 2 miles? Hope they don't decide to up the Army run to 2 miles!

Corrective Surgery on a squint does indeed preclude you from joining the Defence Forces as a Cadet. The surgery leaves a scar on the outside of the eyeball. It's what's referred to as "incisional surgery" in the brochures.

The brochure also states that there must be no evidence of squint or latent squint, so that also rules you out, as those operations are never 100%.

Trust me, I've been there, and done that!

As far as I know corrective surgery for a squint doesn't touch the eyeball, it's done on the muscles attached to the eye. (they are shortened/lengthened as required to fix the squint). Maybe other procedures do leave a scar but the 1 I had didn't, it just was a small operation on the muscle.

What kind of test to they do to see if you have a latent squint? Have you done the test before kermit_ie?

The same test as any optomotrist (sp?) would do it. All corrective squint surgerys leave scars, ask the next time you have an eye test, they can see it! Yes I have done it.
