    Hi there,

I'm looking at replacing my aging Sony Vaio Z600... great laptop and never a single problem, even with plenty of travelling and knocks. I've looked at Sony's current range and it doesn't have what I need :(

Looking for a good CPU, 1GB ram, large HD, bluetooth and wireless LAN plus it has to be small and light. I would liked to have a 14 inch but couldn't find anything to meet my requirements. After a lot of searching I came down to the Samsung x25, 15 inch. It comes with 512Mb as standard so I would need to buy an extra 512Mb.

Total price would be around 2,500 inc. delivery, which is ok with me!

However for a little less I can get the Samsung X50, 15.4 inch.
    X50 comes with 2.0 processor, x25 is 1.86.
    X50 has 1gb standard,
    X50 has a multi DVD+-R, DVD+-RW burner, x25 has only DVD-R, DVD-RW.
    No other differences.

The only thing that is putting me off is that it is widescreen. The x25 is almost too big, think I could just about manage with it. The x50 would be even larger. Would I notice the difference? Unfortunatly there is nowhere I can go and see these 2 laptops side by side. Plus what about games, how would they handle on a widescreen??

While I can't comment specifically on the models you mention above, the wide screen will add a lot of real estate (i.e. weight) to the laptop. I use two laptops - my work laptop (IBM T-40) and my own (HP Pavillion Widescreen). The HP is probably 2-3 times heavier than the IBM, mostly due to the widescreen.

As for games - wow. They do look incredible on the widescreen.

How about a sony S series laptop? I have a VGN-S2XP and its quite close to your requirements:
    P-M 1.6 Dothan
    64MB ATI 9700 graphics
    13.3" widescreen xblack display
    80Gb HDD
    512 MB RAM
    Bluetooth
    802.11g WLAN
    Weight 1.89kg
    DVD+- RW drive

Small, light, large HD, yes, you could do with more RAM, DVD burner is 8x if you use decent discs, consistently burns at 6.2x though I've found.

Just don't plan on playing games with full options. Oh, and it's less than 1100, so cheap especially compared to the Sony jobbies.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll prob hold onto the z600. It's a great laptop, however I wouldn't get much for it now.

    Well, we could talk...maybe :)

_just what I'm looking for specs-wise (if those are what I think they are)
_wanting to avoid eBay if I can (only happy experiences with buying laptops so far but wary where "VAIOs" are concerned)
_& therefore willing to go that little bit extra above for the price in consequence ;)

I'll stop stalking you now :D - but pm me if appropriate.
