Irish Sky viewing Card for use in the UK

First post here, looking for a bit of advice.

I have sky digital here in the UK but would like to use an Irish viewing card so as to pick up the irish stations. I believe people are doing this already.

Anyone know the best way to do it? Is it a case of getting an existing Sky Digital customer in Ireland to get a second box and card and using that in the UK (Can you just use the card or does it have to be the card and box together??).

Any help or adivce on how to go about this would be much appreciated.

    Jnr

If rumours are true and RTE1, RTE2 and TG4 end up on Northern Ireland subscriptions, then an NI card would be the best to go for! Have to wait and see for that.

I have an Irish sub in London for the past 18 months. How I did it was I got an Irish sub in my name at my parents address in Ireland and set up my UK debit card with it, for payment. When Sky card arrived over there it was posted over to me. I pooped the card in my box in UK (not connected to phone line), rang sky from UK with phone number blocked and got card activated. Hay presto watching Fair City and GAA.
As bite says the NI option might be better as u’ll have UK and Irish channels. I have an other box with UK FTV card for UK set up.

cheers for this, what if my box in the UK is connected to the phone line?

well if you have had the box/sub for more than 12 months you can leave the phone disconnected.
You must do this if you are in the wrong country for the card as the box will try to phone the wrong number and the card will be switched off.

The other downside to this is that you can never use interactive services that involve phonecalls or order box office through your phone, but, they are no great loss in my opinion .

Dont be a twat If an Irish box in the UK trys to ring 18XX then it doesnt get through if a UK box in Ireland trys to ring 0800 then it doesnt get through. Neither of these will cause your Sky to be cancelled unless you are supposed to be connected to the phone line in which case you will get letters in the post and a possible charge for the box.

Hacking refers to cards or encryption systems that are cracked without any payment at all to the broadcaster and is illegal.
Of course your Irish Sub is restricted by contract to the 26 counties, so afaik, you would be breaching the terms of your sky contract by having it outside of this states jurisdiction.

It's a grey area, and yes Sky could sue you if they have evidence that that is what you do-they certainly would switch you off.

just about every pub in Europe has SKY. Why do they allow that ? I guess they don't care as long as you're paying.

They did actually sue one in Spain iirc and got about £2000 or so.
That case was pushed by sports rights holders I'd say more so than anything else.
They generally turn a blind eye to it, ie they are not pro active usually.

These cases are usually initiated by the premier league, sky tend to go after guys using residential cards in pubs. They use IMRO here in Ireland to spot these guys using the beer glass logo on sky sports.
