With all this talk of "what ifs" about Horan, Wallace and DOC on the Irish team, don't forget Shaun Payne who has been the best Irish based full back in the past two years and who should have been on the Irish team ahead on Girvan Dempsey this year.

I personally think that MarkMCHugh is a better full back than Payne. Sure Payne looks good buck lacks pace when its needed. Dempsey is a better, more solid full back than both of them. Murphy is streets ahead of them all as he showed on Saturday. If only Eddie let him play like that.

Dempsey didn't play at full back once during this 6 nations IIRC

TBH, I think that although EOS wants Ireland to play too conservative a game, a large part of it was that Murphy simply didn't play well for Ireland.

Payne is a better winger than Dempsey too.

Yeah, still don't really get why Dempsey was picked on the wing at all - EOS being too loyal perhaps...

Kidney had good influence on EOS. When he was in the Irish setup Ireland played a nicer brand of rugby. Since he left it has gone to sh1te.

Like all Irish rugby, its who you know and not how good you are. Look at the disgraceful performance against France and Wales. It was embarrassing. Why dont they bring back somebody like Trevor Brennan? If you threw him in there in the middle of the two of those games he would have caused havoc, fair enough he isnt the cleanest player around but he would have shaken things up big time

I think Trev is probably a lot more of a disciplined player these days - and the rumours are that Sir Clive is keeping a close eye on him for the Lions. Alan Quinlan has quite a similar style as well.

You pretty much nailed it on the head though - IMO EOS really needs to re-consider his substitution strategy. Other teams make much better use of "impact players", but Ireland wait until the game is pretty much beyond reach to make these subs. That was the one good thing about Leinster on Saturday - they were prepared to make the changes soon after half time when things weren't working.
