you should sort your programs by category. That's what I do. In start>All Programs I have:

    Audio
    CD-DVD Burning
    Customisation
    File Sharing
    Games
    Graphics
    Internet
    Misc
    Office Applications
    Programming
    Security
    Startup
    Utilities
    Video

It keeps the start menu a resonable size and means you can find what you're looking for.

Yeah I'd agree, arrange the stuff in category folders, that should get you the space back that you need.

start->settings->taskbar and start menu->click into advanced tab

    in advanced tab click advanced.

Will give you an explorer view of the start bar so you can organise it into something a little more tidy.

task bar properties\general tab\show small icons in start menu if u haven't done that already...you could always just delete the shortcut to say your anti virus software and just use your system tray icon as your shortcut

Ive got all my program in catagories and seems to work fine.
I think if you right click "start" you can explore the start menu, make a few folders and drag and drop (that bit can be done from the start menu to)

how do you have FOUR columns. That's gotta be upwards of 150 things

Use Add/Remove programs to remove everything you haven't used in 3 months, before rearranging your start menu.

    Phone (mobile phone stuff)
    Multimedia (sound and video stuff)

This is mine. My main computer has A,B,C,D all the way down, but this can get annoying if you forget the name of a program.

In this one, the shortcuts are in "Network" for example, the actual program folders, like uninstall and help files is in the "Specifics" subfolder.

I shudder to think how many icons you have on your desktop. Minimal is best.

As has been said, the best option is to right-click Start button and choose Explore and Explore All Users. Then sort programs into catagories. I personally hate when I get to someones PC and the Startmenu is cluttered and the desktop is full of icons.
