Is it possible to record drums with an mbox?

    i.e. 1 kick mic
    2 overheads
    1 snare

I know the mbox only has 2 inputs but can you buy additional inputs for it.

Apologies if this is a stupid question ;)

Whats an MBox, never heard of it, but it sounds like you could!

The last two inputs on the MBox are SPDIF connections. You need a preamp that has SPDIF outs on it to use these. So yes you can do it but you'd need to buy some additional preamps.

    Have you bought it yet??

Not yet, I was looking at some options to start a small studio and I kept coming accross this thing.

Pro tools is an excellent program.

Another option you could do if you we're desperate would be to mic up the kit with a mixer and then send the O/P's of the mixer to the two inputs of the Mbox or if you have the money look at the 002r.

What sites have you been looking at?

How much you willing to spend???

I've been reading Sound on Sound and looking over at the gigsmart recording forum.

I'm in no huge rush to get it so if it requires more saving that is fine but ideally about 600-800e not including mics, monitors etc.

Got a decent Pc allready, 3.1 ghz, about 1 gig of ram.

I wouldnt recommend the mbox for drums. Two inputs isnt really a lot for the money, although the mic pres it comes with are really nice. Another way of doing things would be to buy a small analogue mixer with either direct outs or 4aux outs or similar, and buy a four input external usb/firewire soundcard. This way, you have all four tracks and not just a mix. My current setup is a yamaha 01v running via 4omni outputs into an m-audio quattro soundcard into the laptop and it works grand. Also have the benifit of having a 24ch digital desk which connects to the laptop via the midi-interface on the quattro letting me use it as a remote control for my recording software. The desk has motorised faders so it remembers all my automation (not neccessary but it looks cool).

Anywise, benifits of this way are that its cheaper and more flexible. Disadvantages are that its not HRH protools and you'll most likely end up using illegal software.
