hi, i am running windows me and i tried to change the display settings to the highest screen resoloution. the system told me to restart but when I did thelights at the bottom of my monitor just kept flashing as if trying to load something but nothing happened. I left it for a few hours but nothing. I swithched monitors but the same thing is happening. I tried an old diagnostic floppy in it and it came up with addrss/stuck-bit test :fail
    Address: 000004E0, read 0000ffff, expected 00000000
    Bit-coupling test : fail
I am lost and a bit of a newbie so can anyone help please...my life is on that computer....well nearly

Start windows in safe mode . Press F8 just after the bios loads .

then change your display settings back to normal .
I cant remember because i havent done this in ages , but in case windows restarts with the bad display settings , you can change them in the registry if needs be

Thanks Bodan, i can start up in safe mode but the monitor doesnt display anything. I can hear the hard drive starting up but the monitor screen is blank just flashing lights on the bottom I cant see the screen to change. aaaarrrgghh
I have loaded a diagnostic disk which came with the system i found that this morning but it says that the system is not supported by dell and wont let me run diagnostics. The monitor works until i get past the startup screen if you know what I mean when it comes to display my desktop it dissapears just flashing lights on the cabinet where you can set the brightness vertical contrast etc.
I can shut it down by ressing window key up arrow return return because I can remember how to do that but cant remember how many up arrows till the control panel if you know what I mean.

oh **** sounds like u pushed your video card or monitor too far.. u could try downloading a dos registry editor but thats a bit messy...try this bit un-professional but u never know

    load windows as normal

when u know its loaded and on the desktop scren move the mouse all the way to the top right of the screen

    press the right mouse button

    press the up arrow once

    press tab 7 times

    press right cursor 5 times

    press tab twice

hold the left arrow for about 2 seconds

    hit enter twice

hopefully that works if not your looking at trying to re install windows i'd say

    good luck
