Progressing from Play Money to Real Money

Hi guys I'm a regular on pokerrooms.com under the guise of debt_wish or DebtInVegas. I use this site because no downloads are required and I'm on the college computers which have free access 24/7. I've been using the play money tables for a while now and getting on great but now I would like to progress to real money tables. I was thinking about investing €30-€50 to begin with, would this be enough to cope with the learning curve do you think? Are the real money plyers that much better? I know most people would recommend tiny 10c staked limit games but I have no interest in games that small. What I'd really like to know is how much money could I realistically expect to win/lose if I constantly grind out the games there? And lastly would I be better off with cash games or the regular tournaments?

    Thanks for the help....

For that amount of money and seeing as you don't want ot start at the really low limits i'd say playing 1$, 3$ or max 5$ Sit and Goes would be the best place to start. You'll probably win some money which will give you some extra games. You probably should expect to lose that 50 and maybe another while finding your feet. You may not though. Have you read much on the basics like pot odds, implied odds etc..?

Tournaments are always a good way to start, as you know exactly what your financial risk is.

Ya i'm good with odds, can work them out in my head. And last week i won a real life tournament with 112 players (my first tourney also). I guess maybe i should stick to the low games even if i really don't want to. Thanks for the advice, anymore would still be appreciated.

I've no idea how much you can expect to make out of playing at any kind of level... and I doubt anybody can answer that ..

To be honest, as you're starting out I would recommend staying away from cash tables ... especially NL or PL. Even if you are a good player you will not be able to handle the cash swings that come with playing those games.

Starting off, I would recommend playing $5 tournaments... perhaps even play 10 x $5 tourneys and then come back, post your results and ask for some advice.

It's hard to give good advice blindly.

Return will depend on your level, from what I've seen people report as max: in STTs or 2TTs you'll be looking at about 50% as a good return at low levels, less higher up, cash games I'm guessing 10-15 times the big blind per hour would be the best you're likely to sustain. Obviously, in general, the higher the level the smaller the edge.
