hi, a few months ago i sent in my cao application form with 'hospitality management' in dit as my number 1 choice. So, i was just wondering if people working in the hotel industry would advise me to go into, or avoid this type of career, and why.
i know about the unsociable hours related with such a job, but surely it has its advantages??

any advice would be greatly appreciated

I was thinking recently about doing a bar course.

But a friend said the hours are extremely long.

I would like to work in the industry as I get on well with others.

I am currently thinking about doing a restaurent skills course - becoming a waiter, a food and beverage manager and getting into hotel management.

It is sort of getting into hotel management via the back door.

I know the industry has a bad reputation but I believe it is interesting work.

This industry had a very bad reputation of long hours and bad pay. I like the idea of working with people.

Am i mad for considering the catering industry

why oh why oh why did you put it as your number one course when you know nothing about it?

this is the sort of question you ask before filling out your CAO form.

    stupid.

i put it as my no.1 choice because i worked in a hotel for 2.5 years at a very low level, but i still enjoyed all aspects of the job.so, presumably i would enjoy it at a managerial level also.

besides, you are allowed to change your cao choices up until july 1st, so there is still lots of time to change my mind.
also, i don't think it was 'stupid' to put it down as no.1. i've gone to the d.i.t open day, so therefore have lots of information about the course. i didn't just throw it down flippantly.
i was simply wondering for some feedback if people would advise me to go into the hotel industry as a career, or not. but i'm sorry if i offended you whitewashman with my 'stupid' decisions

I got my higher National Diploma in Hotel Management, and in the town I am in it got me NOWHERE, but I know a girl who is not an assistant manager in one of the Hilton's with good wages....yes the wages aren't great....but depending on the hotel you get into (i.e. how rich the people are staying in it), tips can more and make up for the wages....I am currently not working in a hotel, and I can tell you that I miss the free lunches!!
