there was an article in today's magazine supplement of the irish time's.
on the front page it read "TEENAGE KICKS""why being in a band is good for you .." the article's page read "BAND TOGETHER "

it's aimed at young musicians trying to start bands. they mention 'blast' which i'm sure many of you have heard about. if not, check out www.blast.ie

the article gives 8 steps to being a young successful band.
      1. find some like-minded friends
      2. find a name
      3. find somewhere to practice
      4. write some songs
      5. play a gig
      6. be nice to your parents
      7. get your priorities straight
      8. become a better, happier, person - by having fun

Eh as of a couple of days ago, Blast is dead...apparently. Hopefully that revelation wasn't an April fools job as if it was I'm bitterly disappointed. Blast can go **** themselves.

I'm sorry, but that is complete bollox, and what exactly are you hoping to achieve by posting it here? It was undoubtedly written by a middle aged journalist (no doubt a parent) who put about 15 seconds of thought into writing 10 steps to being a successful young band, but gave up after 8 steps.

However, because I'm such a nice person, I'll do the job of the Irish Time's editor and sort out the mess for him. Actually, do me a favour marshmallow and find out who wrote that article, I want to write to them, thanks.

      1. find some like-minded musicians with the same aspirations as you, both musically and career wise. If there's 4 people in the band who just want to jam and do nothing serious, and one person who wants to be a superstar, it ain't going to work. Places to find musicians - web boards, classified ads, at gigs of bands that you like, friends of musicans you like, notice boards of music shops.

      2. find a name that doesn't begin with 'The'. Google the name to make sure it hasn't been done before, in ANY country.

      3. find somewhere to practice. There's a list of rehearsal rooms on this board, but you just can't beat a place of your own. Someone with a soundproofable garage is an advantage.

      4. write some songs - this is such lame advice it's actually uneditable.

      5. play a gig, but whatever you do, don't play a 'pay to play' gig. There are many evil sharks in Dublin who will exploit young bands into paying to play at crummy venues to no people. Talk to bands who have experience gigging and ask for support slots or for advice on putting on your own successful gig. Join blast and gigsmart, contribute to the community and if you are good to them, they will be good to you and give you gigs. Practice like a band possessed before your first gig. Even if the songs aren't that strong, playing them well with a tight band will get you fans, and respect among your peers.

      6. be nice to your pals in New Colour Soul

      7. get your priorities straight. Put the following list in order of priority - Fame, Wealth, Fun, Critical acclaim, Strong fan following, Respect from other bands. Next, decide if you aspire to ever being signed, ie going professional, or if you are happy to remain independent and amateur. Read this article http://members.boards.ie/robbie1876/problemwithmusic.doc

      8. become a better, happier, person - by having sex with groupies

      9. Associate yourself with other, more experienced bands who you like. Get to know them, do nice things for them, turn up at their gigs and talk to their fans. It costs nothing to be nice to other bands, they are not your 'competition', there is no such thing in an industry of original music. These are guys from whom you can learn from their mistakes.

      10. Most important thing, never ever take any advice offered to you from an Irish Times journalist.

      Robbie

      it was Anna Carey

we're talking about young teenagers. not all have sex.

and in the article she mentioned three bands-
      1. Holy Showcase (3guys ,who i think are in 3rd yr coz i know one of them, and 1 girl in 4th yr)
      2. Senate (4 guys. again i think they're in 3rd year)
      3. Chewing on Tinfoil (3 guys in 6th yr)

Doesn't Eamonn Dorans charge bands to play?

I'm pretty sure they do as most of the ****e that plays in there is woeful.

Ok, firstly, I thought the journalist just made a list of headings and that was that. In fact, I've since found out that she explores each of those headings with a couple of paragraphs of text each. I haven't read that text, but I'd really like to get hold of the complete article.
we're talking about young teenagers. not all have sex.
I know, but I thought since her point about becoming a happier person was completely irrelevent, i thought I should make mine irrelevent too. Having said that, what she says in the text might change my opinion of that, I'm just going by the headers, which is all I have to go by.

Do the Times Online reprint articles from the magazine also?
i personally know some guys who are trying to get a band sorted and thought it might help.
Fair enough, but without the supporting text of the article it looks like a pointless, arrogant list that is so obvious it is patronising.

who ever is organising the gig would have to pay Dorans to rent the venue, i dont think ive ever heard of Dorans giving the venue for free.

          3. Chewing on Tinfoil (3 guys in 6th yr)

Sorry to nitpick, but there is 4 guys in CoT. ;)

And I don't know why so many people hate Blast. Ignorant arses tbh. They say they hate it because kids go to it. Of course kids go to it. Blast is designed for kids, you retards. Blast do all-ages gigs. Blast is one of the few good gig promotions around, available for under 18s.

And someone said Blast is for Metallica-cover bands? Bull****, man. I've seen tons of great bands play Blast. Mike Got Spiked are a quality band. Acidtone are very talented. And there's loads of other great bands, being ignored because of ignorant asses.

No wonder most bands that play there are atrocious.

but what i said counts for most venues in dublin and probably all over Ireland, Im sure theres probably exceptions but weve played Dorans,Voodoo,Sugar Club,TBMC and Whelans and all charge to rent the venue. Some of those were even charity gigs, so your gonna get charged.

When people say pay to play I dont think you are taking them up right .Weve done gigs where the organiser has had to pay the venue but we havent had to pay them anything to actually play. Weve done the other aswell and had to pay for tickets before we played the gig and sell the tickets to make our money back. I think maybe people were talking about gigs like Blast or something along those lines.
