Hello guys im looking to upgrade to PCI-Express and i dont know whether to go for a P4 3.4 or AMD64 3500. The P4 chip as u know has 1mb cache as apposed to AMD's 512kb.. This will be mainly a gaming rig and both chips are basically the same price on kompett.ie. Can anyone help me choose give me a good reason to pick one over the other? Thanks :D

AMD are meant to be better for gaming and Intel for encoding. So go with the AMD, you also have the added benefit of it being 64 bit, so it should last you a bit longer. Go and download yourself a free copy of Windows XP 64bit and you should notice a big speed improvement. Also with the AMD you could get a SLI mobo and a couple of 6800 Ultras!!

Thanks Spartacus. Yep i suppose Windows 64 is out in the next few weeks making the current P4 a bit obsolete.. Wont be doing SLI im afraid but i do have an x850xt PCI-E on order. Should be nice. ;)

Your best bet would be the AMD 46 preferably the socket 939 version as this would allow you to upgrade the processor in the future when the dual core FX64 become affordable and widely available. Also it would be notable that the athlon 4000 has 1MB cache.

It looks like i will opt for AMD64, the 4000 is a bit too expensive for me right now its a serious price. Unless u know where to get it cheaper? Its only €522 on komplett lol. ;)

Yes the new ones are but they are more expensive. He was comparing the 3500 to a similarly priced P4 which would have been the older 32bit model.

Maybe its just me but i had a 3200+ A64 for a few months, i now have a 3GHZ P4, and there is no noticeable difference at all. Games or otherwise.

All depends how picky you are I guess and what games you're playing :)

    .....

    Have I missed something?

well its out, but it hardly makes it obsolete. Would be silly to build a new non 64bit system now tho (and arguably silly to build a non 64bit comp anytime in the last year, as win64 was known about.. ;))
