before you go rebuilding, have you added a load of drives cards over time. it's amazing how many odd little problems and random shutdowns can be caused by cheap power supplies. just something to be aware of. the PSU's in pre-built systems and upgrade bundles tend towards being sh1te.

it can be worthwhile to unplug all but the bare minimum of extra drives. you say the ECS mobo seems to be overheating. so did my Asus based first build. But only after i put in 2 optical drives and 69gigs in the form of 5 hard drives. All powered by a 430watt budget PSU. that one went down more often than a hooker on a bungie.

my next build i'll be spending (almost) as much on a quality supply (saw some nice tagan models with 2 x12V rails, for better stability) as i do on the mobo.

also, for your first build, i'd suggest not too fancy case. My thermaltake xaser3 lanfire vm2000a (blood stupid name) was a messy and painful first build, mainly due to the 4 casefans and controls.

anywho, i'm babling again, so i'll shut up again. hope i've been some help.

edit: about the CPU's, so long as the new mobo has the same socket type as your old one, swaping them over isn't a big a deal. but be sure to put some thermal compound on the chip before you drop the heatsink on it. i'll get around to havin a closer look at the boards you've linked to later and let you know what i think.
