I had a thing for Double Dragon back when it was in the arcades....i don't think much of beat em ups now, Streets Of Rage was pretty good too

    Street Fighter 2
They were more Side Scrolling fighters, i mean just plain old one on one fighting.

the soul cailibur/blade series (even though i've only played soul calibur II)

I say tobal is the best fighing series ever, it died a rather quiet death after just 2 games. Back when tekken and the likes were pretend 3d you could run freely around huge levels in tobal-similar to bushido blade. And it didn't have any gimmick like bouncing breasts to help it along, it was just a really good fighter, with an excellent cast of characters and great play mechanics.
After that the only fighters I bothered with were sould blade/calibur and smash brothers, all of which rocked, but they are also not in the poll......

How is street fighter 2 a series?

Ahh the obligatory annual fighting game thread. You left out the SNK games - King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury (worth mentioning for Mark of The Wolves at least) etc.

My opinion, for what it's worth:

Mortal Kombat - Loved 1 and 2, superb games altogether. 3 was horrible and tuned the series into some sort of joke. Though 4 was a good laugh, Quan Chi's fatality where he rips the opponent's leg off and beat him/her to death with it = the best move in any game ever. :D

Street Fighter - Pure perfection. Best game series ever.

Tekken - Good fun with mates when neither of you have a clue about the finer detials of the game. Otherwise let down by unbalanced characters.

Dead Or Alive - Never liked this series from the outset. The characters always seemed bland and uninspiring. Gameplay just bores me to death.

Virtue Fighter - Excellent stuff but requires too much time to achive any level of skill, time I never had. I always got bored and went back to SF.

Killer Instinct - Ahh the game that got away. Only ever played the first one in an arcade for ten minutes around the time it came out. Always appeared on the console I didn't have. Don't have the experience on it to judge but seemed like fun.

Street Fighter series, not only are all the street fighters, and the alpha's (alpha 2 is possably the single best beat em up, ever) theres also the semi street fighter ones, capcom vs SNK, Marvel super Heroes vs Street Fighter (another favourite of mine), Marvel vs Capcom, etc etc. Such a series.

Tekken is also quite fun, well Tekken3 is, the charecter balance is n/a though tbh, so many useless fighters in that game (on saying that, street fighter..... dan?!), and the only combo's really worth looking at were the juggle combo's, but still a fun game to pass the time with.

Why is DOA in the list though? its not a beat em up, its just an excuse to label soft core porn as a game, diabolical gameplay imo.

My favourite fighting series isn't there - Super Smash Bros!

Another amazing beat em up was Fighters Destiny on the N64. Great!

    Dead Or Alive
Well for me it was a toss up between Street Figher 2 and Tekken... I voted Tekken because it was more technical (IMO) than SF2... I could go on playing it for hours and hours in versus mode.
SF2 was the reigning champion for many years, but if I had them both infront of me now, I'd probably be playing Tekken.

ROFL... hang on it was actually a great game...

Dude, I hope that's just ironic pedantry:D SF2 has more sequels/special editions than any other game ever!

Mortal Kombat: SHALLOW always has always will be

Street Fighter 2: GODLIKE brought the genre to the masses, and it's sequels were always progressive and more importantly fun. you wouldn't see a *cool* game like Tekken do a comic-book-tie-in

Tekken SHALLOW pretentious, but it did bring *it's* genre(3-d fighter) to the masses, too cool for skool tho.

Dead Or Alive DEAR, OH DEAR

Virtua Fighter GREAT remember when you *first* saw VF? blown away I was! Didn't get into it tho due to dumb teenage stubborness(and my love for SF2)

Killer Instinct GREAT just the one game, all the rest here are full series, I loved this a lot, but SF really does have to beat it(no pun intended)

I know. I wasn't being sarcastic or anything.

I even loved Powerstone 2, which was never as well recieved as the first one. I just love the level where you're fighting on an elevator that just keeps going up and up and up for the battle and eventually reaches outer space and a giant alien shows up. Great stuff.

yeah, never played the second one, but I do remember it being very original; throwing stuff at each other and all!

Where's Soul Calibur? By far the best beat-em up of all time. Street Fighter II would be in 2nd place for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,848 ✭✭✭✭Zombrex

    Tekken
Never mind Soul Calibur ("2" hardly counts as a series) ... where the f((k is King of the Fighers!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 612 ✭✭✭Phil_321

    Eh,
    Soul Blade,
    Soul Calibur I,
    Soul Calibur II
    Soul Calibur III(coming soon)

Sounds like a series to me.

I must be among the few that actually really liked DOA 3. Thought it was a class game, far superior to SC2 anyway and about the same level as Tekken 3/T/4.

King of The Fighters = top stuff.
Samurai Showdown (esp IV) was a brilliant series of fighters
but Street Fighter 2 = The Daddy.

    series? dunno.

    Game???

Capcom Vs SNK 2 Mark Of The Millenium 2001

Blanka ruled in SF:alpha2, I always thought he majorly sucked before that, but in alpha2 he was class, Fei Long is still the king tho :)

He my fav character , fast and powerful. Nothing better than a slow ball to finish an opp whos only getting up or frazzing their asses.

Was a online emulator compo using this game here boards last year, lack of full time Kaillerra server killed it. (with me on top of the league)

Street fighter 2 is the daddy. The fact that dead or alive ws concidered in the poll above better games is a crime.

this isnt a good thread to poll the best beat em up series
    no soulblade/calibur
    no king of fighters
    no smash bros.
    no Marvel vs. capcom
and killer instict was barely a series (even though the original was f**kin amazing - go Cinder!)

    my two cents:
    1. - Street Fighter series (on the grounds of how long and how addictive its)
    2. - Soulblade/calibur series (cos I rock at these games and im not afraid to risk saying - play me at SC2 and i will own you :p )
    3. - Marvel versus Capcom/SNK (all marvel vs. games just rock sooo much ass)
    4. - Tekken (im not a big fan of the series but i do see the appeal and understand some of the skill it requires)
    5. - Mortal Combat (again im not a big fan, but those games have a massive audience and I see the appeal + its been going for ages)

    Best fighter series ever...

    1. Streef Fighter, purely on longevity and the ability to constantly reinvent itself.
    2. Soul Calibur, probably the best figher game ever and certainly most beautiful to look at, it was so difficult putting this at number 2 rather than 1.
    3. Virtual Fighter

But hold on what about warlords(possibly the worst game ever) or IK Karate + on the Atari ST!!!

    Street Fighter 2
    Ciaran500 wrote:

Answer: Along time there was a game called Street Fighter, i never actually playd it but i hear you could only be Ryu or Ken. Then along came Street Fighter 2, which started the series: Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Hyper Street Fighter 2 or something like that, thats to name but a few of the Street Fighter 2 series not even mentioning the EX Alpha ones, which i never got into at all.

Guys im the one who started this tread, sorry about the lack of games in the poll but i onlt named the ones that i really liked, except DOA i just thiught of it, I know there are hundreds of others out there, i forgot to add an "any Others" option in the poll, but its turning out to be a good tread, keep ' em coming.

Oh and By the Way........The King Of Beat 'Em Up Is MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!!

ahh double dragon, now your taking me back.

for me its street fighter 2, always has been, always will be. Morkat Kombat was a mere shadow of SF imo. Played Killer Instinct again recently. Man the graphics in that game hold up well. The first was much better than the sequel too.

Single gamewise double dragon, though the sequels were crap, so SF gets the crown.

Renegade and target renegade are a close second

    Street Fighter 2
Would have voted for Super Smash Bros even though it's more of a party game than a beat em up but I said Mortal Kombat for the finishers but not the new ones

single player beat em up wise.....
its just gotta be Streets of Rage with streets of rage 2 being the best out of them.
I still think sum1 should sort out a re-make of this genre. SOR4 would rock if done right. also an ultra violent film would be cool, dig up jean claude van damme for it, give it an 18s rating, no plot but just kick ass all the way through. it would rock

The fact that dead or alive ws concidered in the poll

That person is a moron :)

Streets of Rage, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter

In that order, imo. I remember playing Street fighter original a while back, its incredibly crap and as far as I remember, the characters Ryu and Ken do not resemble those in the much later sequel.

Yeah well the original SF was notoriously crap, and not many will try to deny that. However its the sequels you should be talking about.

It wasn't great but was the first I can remember with 6 buttons and "secret" moves, the fireball. Karate champ was innovative with the 2 joysticks too.
Of course there was the version of sf with the bid rubber pads for buttons that you had to beat on.
