    Hey,

I'm 17 as well, I take it you are in 6th year, and not 5th like myself.

As for my portfolio, it's not really existant.. My work, is on sheets in my room, but If they except computer art then here's some of it.

    http://shrimp123.deviantart.com/gallery/

The picture of your folio is very small, it's not like a link either. I would love to see it up close, as one of the reasons I have not really gotten stuck into my folio is because I'm not sure what I have to put into it. If you could get some more pics of it, or at least bigger ones I'd be very happy. Thanks.. by the looks of yours it looks nice a neat.

    :D

hey sorry i didnt realise that it would be a small pic but there is more now, if i can get some more ill post them too ;)

those computer images are cool, i think the colleges will accept those but it depends on what course you apply to maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

    Hey,

I'm not sure how much stuff you are supposed to have for your portfolio, but I know that I seen people handing in theirs and they had about 5-10 A1 sheets full of it. I know it's quality and not quantity but still.. :) One thing I will say, I've said it already, but It does look very neat.

May I ask, are you a guy or a girl? From the style of your art, I'm guessing a girl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Seems good, What is the course that you are appling for.. and are you in 5th or 6th year?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭hum

im in 6th year my portfolio assesment is on monday, i applied to three courses, animation(hence the storyboard etc), visual art practices and model making for film and media.

they will accept photography cos i have some photographs in my foundation sketch books to support other work and stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

    Yeah, I get ya.

Your work looks pretty good, I think there's a good chance you will get in. You do know that they breeze through the stuff. So you dont want to little cos they will be finished really quickly. But by the sounds of it, your work looks like the right amount.

You have no reason to be nervous, It's better if you become excited rather than nervous. Do you know anyone else submitting there's?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭hum

hey, no i dont know anyone else submitting a portfolio this year, but i know some people who went to iadt, so before i started they gave me some advice about what to put in etc.
thanks for your positive advice about it man, i know they fly through the stuff and believe me i have gone through it millions of times in my head about the amount i should put in, so i kinda tried to meet it half way and put in enough to show i am dedicated to art but at the same time not to much so they wont get bored looking at it.
i know i shouldnt me nervous but i cant help it at this stage!, the main reason i posted is cos my family and friends have seen it alot and i just want others opinions.
what are you thinking of applying to yourself?, are you doing a portfolio course or anything like that?

those people who i know who went to iadt live in dublin so they havnt seen any of my work or anything just incase your wondering!

Ok, well I'm glad you are sounding confident, thats the way to be.

I am thinking about doing a course in graphic design / post production work. Because at the moment, it's the only thing that I'm seeing as a possiblity. I mean, It also because I haven't really looked into other stuff as much, and I seem to have a flare for this. But I'm not sure what course I will have to do in order to achive this. I would say that this will need a portfolio. Luckly My art teacher has contacts in a very very top post production company in the city centre, so I can get work experiance any time I need it, also I can get plenty of advice, and any questions I need answered they will do the job for me. :)

I wish you luck in handing it in. I was just wondering, what school do you go to? for all I know you are in my school ;)

thats cool that you know you can get in contact with people who work in that area of design , im not really sure as to what course you could do for that but perhaps as you say graphic design and then you could break off to a certain area after that.i go to Arklow C.C.

oh ok.. i am from dublin.. so i wouldn't know u.. did u try ur portfolio on NCAD?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭hum

no i didnt apply to ncad, when i went to the iadt open day i thought it suited me down to a tee and i really liked their attitude towards it in general

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

cool, some ppl say that NCAD ruins an artist.. I am on a neutral standing on them at the moment, this summer I want to do the Portfolio preperation course.. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭hum

yeah portfolio preperation courses are a good way to get you kick started i guess, give you a good idea of what needs to go in and how to approach it.
i guess everyone has their own opinions on ncad, basically i think it depends on what you think of it urself like i know some people who go they love it. i suppose that applies to every college everywhere.

here is an article i found a while back, maybe you have read it, maybe not, it helped me understand it abit more...

The thing I took away from my failed, rather half-hearted, attempt to get into Art college (never really took it serious, wanted to be a computer programmer, and guess what I am :D) is that they like you drawing real things in front of you, rather than things from your imagination or photos.

Can't really see your pictures clearly so I don't know if you have or not, but something to keep in mind and tbh the only bit of advice I can offer about art college.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,344 ✭✭✭red_bairn

Hey Shrimp those computer images are very good :) . I liked the photography you used. What camera do you have? Do you like skateboarding? Those pictures have a nice style of design. If you are thinking of going to any portfolio perparation courses i'd recommend IADT. It has various summer courses. Drop by at Dun Laoghaire to get a brouchure or get a friend to get one. I attended the Animation course but they also have a General Portfolio Course. Another one is the Filming Production course which my friend attented. Both of us have applied for these courses in DLIADT.
Hum your work is impressive. From your second page i'm guessing you have a style of illustrated work. I find illustration work fun. So you have your assessment on Monday(is that for all 3 courses in the same college?).
I have also applied to Animation and Model Making for film and media. I'm going for my assessment on Thursday. I'v already had a Portfolio assessment in DIT. Yet no result. I just wanna say to all of you who are taking part in portfolio assessments- "Good Luck!". :D

P.S. Hum hope to see you in DLIADT.

hey, red_bairn, man its cool to hear from someone else who is doing the same as me right now, thanks for the comments, i do like illustrative work plus alot more i guess, so yeah that assesment is on for the three courses.

what kinda stuff did you put into your pfolio man?, how many pieces etc etc
i dont know anyone else applying this year as i said so its cool to find out these things. good luck with yours too!

    Hey Red_Bairn,

I actually dont skate, I just have an interest in the scene, for example.. The Urban, Grunge look. I was happy with how that skatepark picture turned out when I got it printed off. It's A3 by the way.

As for my photography, those pictures in my gallery were from my first ever time going out to tkae photos as art. The camera I use is a Samsung Digimax 202, It's a 2.0 MegaPixel camera, with only x2 digital Zoom, nothing fancy, it's more of a holiday camera. I really need a new one, you can see the quality or rather lack there off in the photos when you view them at full size. Stil though, i'm happy with the compistion/colours which came out.

I am going to be uploading some more later, maybe even upload some sketches. :D

    Hey hum,
what kinda stuff did you put into your pfolio man?, how many pieces etc etc

yeh well i gave to DIT some photography,life-drawing(dad,lil' bro & other),3 paintings, an observational pic of my cat, landscape pic, 2 storyboards(Don't ask me why!) and about 5 drawings of random people i saw in magazines(one such person is the maker of FATHER TED/I, Keano actor). For that college i had 18 pieces in total.[they asked for a max. of 20]

Unfortunately i thought a lot of sketch book had about 50% of animated work so i dismissed it.There is some work in it that i actually look back and say,"Whoa!how the hell did i do that?" You know what i mean. But a lot of the work in my sketch book is mainly absolute crazy ****. I believe people may take my work offensive...so i may make a lil' foot note at the start of my sketch boot declaring that i mean not to discriminate in any way.tis crazy!

Hey hum how did you do in art for mocks?Moi got a crappy 64%. :( I will do better coz i know i wasn't well prepared. You know i'v actually been interested in illustrative work since 2nd class. But my 1st choice on the auld CAO is animation. 1st on 7th level is Model making. well cya then.

    hey shrimp

Jezus i'v been using a Nikon, Model: E2200 (x3 digi Zoom) and i think you did pretty well with it. If you get a new camera don't spend like over i'd say €300
for it. Get decent ones out there fro sale. Check out http://creativeireland.com/
I'v started using this site after seeing your stuff. Here is one example.

    deviant

I'v got a funny one too. Check out the Leprechaun. :D
