Summer Rugby League in Ireland

    Hi Folks,

As the union season will be ending for most players in the next month or so, you may want to consider playing a bit of Rugby League over the summer. Any union player will pick it up in no time at all, and new players are welcomed by every club.

I have played for the last three summers, and it is great fun (especially for props like myself who don't get given the ball all that much in union :D). Apart from keeping up your fitness levels, you will really notice the difference in your defensive game when you go back to union in the Autumn.

The Rugby League Ireland home page is at www.rli.ie, where you can find a list of the clubs playing over the summer. It is now pretty much a nationwide league, so you will probably find a club near you.

Reply to the thread, or PM me if you want any more details :)

Dave, not at all - you will find a huge mixture of players:
guys from SA, NZ or Oz who play it as their main game and AIL through to J4 union players. You will pick it up really quickly if you have played union recently.

If you take most the teams in the league, about half the players are knew to League in the last couple of years.

I think the season starts soon enough, but that is only a few 9-aside league games. If you start in June, I am sure you will still get loads of games in as the season runs right up until the union season starts again.

As I said, new players come along each season, so do not be the least bit worried about not having any experience. The main things new players have to worry about are: remembering to play the ball properly in the tackle, and getting back 10 yards when you defending (probably the most physically punishing about the game!)

Like I said, give me a shout if you want any info.
