I don't know but are there ones out yet with hard drives in them like an mp3 player, at some stage you should be able to record as good quality divx to a 100GB internal drive on a camcorder.

    Why?

    DV tape is used because

    (a) it's cheap to manufacture
    (b) it's VERY high capacity (approx 15GB per 1 hour tape).

You can just use the firewire port found on most decent DV camcorders and transfer it to PC (then burn it to DVD or whatever).

I think the Sony DVD camcorders are around the €800 mark. They are overpriced IMHO and they use mini DVD's, not standard size discs. These discs are much more expensive than standard DVDR's and of course have smaller capacity. Something worth bearing in mind perhaps

You must be thinking of the old analogue tape (VHS-C or Hi-8 usually).
Tranfering that to the PC was a bit of a pain in the tits.

The newer Digital 8(cheap) and Mini DV(higher quality) are digital formats.
All that is required is to plug the camera into the PC and hit transfer.

    Just make sure

1./ That you have a Firewire port on the PC (aka Sony i-Link or IEEE-1394).
2./ That the camera you buy has one too (all digital 8 machines and most Mini DV do - go for Mini DV if you can).

That said, a hard disk based unit would be nice, problem is price.
