    Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but here goes in any case:

    I was just wondering if anyone knows about this system. I signed up yesterday for it PayPal (www.paypal.com) because you need to donate cash in gang wars to register your account.

    With all the scams on the net to do with Credit Cards I am always a bit wary of using my card number.

    My concern lies more so with the actual company rather than any security issues to do with the card number submission. (i.e. I was on a secure server when I submitted my card number).

    There were just slightly dodgy statements in their confirmation mail that got me thinking:

    PayPal Credit Card Services
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
    *Note: PayPal strongly discourages users from calling their credit card
    companies in order to obtain their PayPal Confirmation Number. If PayPal
    receives a complaint from Visa, MasterCard, or your card issuer regarding
    your account, the complaint will be investgated. As a result, your PayPal
    account may be closed. Please check for your Confirmation Number on your
    online credit card statement or when you receive it in the mail.
    </font>

    After you sign up they charge a dollar to your card and then refund it to your paypal account. But before you can pay anybody else with paypal you have to give them some number that is apparently on your statement.

    Anyone heard of this before or is it a scam? Its probably me just being paranoid but I thought I ask the experts smile.gif

    Don't worry about them. I signed up with them about 4 months ago. no problems, got the dollar refund aswell. the confirmation number is to confirm that you actually own the card and your not at a bogus address. the number on the card is used by them to contact visa to check that the card is real aswell.

    It's not a scam SHADOW, it's just a fraud prevention measure. Look at it this way - if you steal a credit card or use a stolen credit card, you're not going to be having the statement delivered to you, right? Well, Pay Pal are using that to confirm your identity. They add a unique id to the string that goes on your credit card statement, and you have to supply that to them before you can actively use PayPal. And voila, you've proved that it's really your card. Quite clever really, when you think about it. Oh, and they give you the dollar back BTW...

    yeah I figured I was just being paranoid but still having no clue about these things tends to make you cautious.

    Thanks for the heads up.
