I'm putting my 20 inch CRT into retirement and I'm hoping to buy a 19 inch TFT monitor. As I am a gamer what should I be looking out for? and which monitrs are best and reasonably priced.......... I've been recommmended Samsung and LG response rate are around 8 - 15 ms.

Any good pointers on buying and sites to buy on the net? (ps www.Komplett.ie seems good)

iiyama make the best monitors in my opinion,

i have the 19inch CRT vision master pro 454 and it's great for games.

i'm still unsure if i'd use a TFT for games i just don't think they are as good as CRT's just yet.

    cus your post says CRT.

i was using a 21" crt and while the image might have been very slightly better than the TFT i use now the space saved on my desk makes it worthwhile.

    I went for the,

Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP 20" performance LCD Flat Panel Monitor. 250cd/m2 brightness, 400:1 contrast, 16ms response time. Midnight grey TCO99

their is the 2005 Model aswell, but the 2001 is better.

Brilliant monitor. Bought two of them in the US two months ago for $720 each. (The screens detach nicely from their stand to put in a carry on bag for the plane to bring home with you - Wasn't paying european prices for them :))

They are great for gaming, playing at 1600x1200 natively with no ghosting at all. From the reviews I read and even using the Dell equivalent, i'd recommend it over the Dell if you can afford the extra

my advice is get a 19inch crt ,the display is way better than any tft monitor and u can use osd menu to adjust contrast color warmth to ur own liking ,for gaming crt is best tft hasnt the speed or responsiveness of a good crt monitor ,if u reed any pc gaming mags they all say crt is the best for gaming for various technical reasons .a crt is analog ,so it can display almost an infinite range of colors and any resolution mode that your graphics card can output, get at least 75 mhz refresh rate crt.

I have a Benq FP71E+ - 8ms response time, no ghosting whatsoever. Its only 17" but the quality is great. I play counter strike source and unreal tournament 2004 on it without any problems - both using the monitor's native resolution of 1280x1024. Also it has dual DVI and VGA inputs - using DVI myself. I know you're after a 19", but I'm sure this one has a bigger brother available :)

Do NOT buy the Dell 2005FPW. It's a slick 20" widescreen flat panel, with some great connectivity features but it suffers from MASSIVE backlight problems and dead pixels are a cert out of the box.

Check forums like HardForum and Dell Talk and you'll find 30+ page long topics of people complaining about it. I'm one of them! :(

Ended up forking out a few hundred more for the Apple Cinema Display 20" Widescreen instead. Same actual panel as the Dell but Apple implement it right, no backlight problems and it looks beeeautiful. Dell are cheaper but they cut corners and it really shows in the 2005FPW.

I'm using a Benq FP937s+ that I got from Jes (coz of their pixel check possibility). It is a lovely monitor and great for games, no ghosting etc (8ms reponse time).

Only issue I would have is a CRT is better for watching DVDs or photo work coz of the number of colours they can display (32 bit for CRT while LCD is usually 16.7 million or 16.2 million). Mind you I could watch DVDs on it just fine but maybe some people would be annoyed by the difference.

Humans can't actually SEE that many colours. >24bit colour is useful in scanners (because of the potential need to convert a small fragment of the visible spectrum into a full spectrum, with negatives and such but is only for convenience (removes need for funny bit-packingin the graphicc card) in monitors.

That said, CRT displays are apparently still visually better.
