Damned hackers

Got a little problem with my PC.
I recently had to move from my house to an apartment due to ongoing building work. In doing so I left behind my DSL line, which was bad enough but to add insult to injury everytime I've dialled in since the move I've been plagued with what my Zone Alarm Firewall calls "intrusion attempts" most coming from the same IP and a good chunk appearing to come from my IP. It reached the point yesterday were my firewall automatically engaged the "internet lock." Is there any action I can take against these people to keep this from continuing?
    thank you

Check your machine for viruses and spamware.

After that just set zonealarm not to register that you are there.

They are most likely random attacks and its normal although annoying.

it's been going on for over a week, I'm beginning to think it's not random. Also it's the free version of ZA so i can't go invisible.
I'll run Ad-Aware when i go home though and see if that picks up anything siginifigant (in internet cafe)

If it's your DNS server trying to talk to you on Port 53 that's normal.

try running spybot and install "spywareblaster" as well as ad-aware, should get rid of most things.

Zone Alarm is hyper-sensitive. Don't misconstrue the term hacker.. What is most likely happening you is either..

    A) A service that requires handshaking is requesting a response from you and you firewall perceives it as an intrusion attempt

    or

    B) Some kid is probably just sweeping your subnet looking for anything.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

    Hi,

The difference now is that the firewall in the dsl modem is no longer shielding your pc.

The dsl modem uses a proceedure called NAT to assign and control access to the internet and forward packets to the proper computer.

That is usually very good at filtering out most hacker scanning leaving Zonealarm with little to deal with but the more focused attacks.

As you are only using an standard modem now, you are not protected and are seeing more alerts. This does not meen that your are the focus of a focused attack and i would not worry.

Just set Zonealarm to warn you of high rated attacks and don't worry about the others.

    Hope this helps

that's very helpfull, thanks. So this number of alerts is normal? I have set it to only warn me of high alerts since i posted orginally, it's picked up a few since then. when a high alert happens is there any action i can take beyond logging off?

In fairness as long as you have a virus free system thats patches to the last there's nothing to worry about even if you firewall picks up a portscan or whatever from script kiddie or as you like to call them "hackers".

To tell you the truth i would not even worry about the high alerts. It just means that Zonealarm is working.

Run a good spyware scanner every week, keep your anti-virus up to date and your operating system patched.

I find the fact that there are alerts a good indication that the system is protected.

Let me know if you are worried about any particular alerts.

In my defence I was using the term very loosely just cause it the easiest thing to say at the time
