Any idea what make/model it is?

    I was wondering that myself.
It doesn't say on the website.
You can take it, it's not a Sony or Panasonic though ;)

Apparently Aldi have had 28" widescreens on sale in the UK before, and they were Bush models. Not top of the range certainly, but not bad for the price either.

No idea if this is the same model.

It seems to be either a Vestel or Beko. The remote looks like a Beko remote so I'll sway towards that.

I don't know about this model in particular, but the majority of widescreen TV's have no problems displaying both PAL and NTSC. My parents have a fairly old 28" Philips one (at least 7 years old), and it works fine with NTSC sources.

Edit: BTW, as far as I can see, this is it:
    http://www.beko.com/products/show/?grb=television&cat=44&gId=2&PID=28SF+T27
The site says that this particular model does playback NTSC.

i knew that, but just wanted to make 100% sure, so im not in for any nasty surprises if i do pick it up. thanks :)

will this offer be running in all aldi shops in dublin ? ive never even been in an aldi before so im kinda clueless about these offers,
how long is the offer running for ? do they have only a certain amount of stock available in each store or anything like that ??

Usually every aldi store has the same stuff. Every thursday morning. Stock is usually limited on the offers so you'd want to be there early in the morning.

One tip: They don't accept credit cards or cheques, so have either cash or a laser card on you.

They normally sell out of the popular specials very early on Thursdays
It's about 30 yoyo's cheaper then normal so I'd say they will have some left by the weekend.

I'm going to pick one of these up in the morning if I can beat the queues. I'll let ye know what its like.

we bought 2 of em last year (after a lightning strike destroyed every TV in the house) , fantastic picture and sound ... will auto switch pal and ntsc .. think it was tevion ... .. not totally flat but near enuff ... also has tv / audio in via RCA's on the side and 3 scart connectors at the rear if i remember right :)

    Nice one :)

when you say not totaly flat, would it be like a trinitron or something similar?
what viewing modes are there i.e. can you watch 4:3, 16:9, in between?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Well you can watch 4:3 images on a widescreen, but it'll be pillar boxed... Ie black bars down the sides. Ans it wont be a trinitron for that price, I doubt Sony licenses Beko to use Trinitron technology.... it's probably near flat, with a delta screen (the dots are in a triangle)

What other aspect ratios do you want, fair enough most digital networks broadcast 14:9, ie there's rather small black bars on the left and right. I'm talking mostly about BBC 1 and BBC 2, ITV and C4.... Sky don't bother AFAIK, they expect any one subscribing to them to be watching on Widescreen, or 16:9 in a 4:3 Raster....

    Jaysus, what a rant.

What's the point of broadcasting in 14:9 when everyone's tv displays either 4:3 or 16:9 natively?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

It's a comprimise, between both obviously. When 14:9 is displayed on a 4:3 display then not much of the image is lost, conversily you get much more on a 16:9 display. However this is only on the digital network, and is being kept in place because when Analogue switch off happens particularly in the UK, there will be no 4:3 broadcast. Currently, the analogue network is 4:3 and the Digital network is 14:9. The BBC imparticular needs to cater for the license payer by providing all situations for all people. Hence the 14:9, the Mono Audio constraints, and the B+W broadcasting. The later will probably stay in place for many years to come as they don't cause any transmitter issues. IE no more bandwidth is taken up by doing it the way it's done.

Also all programmes made 16:9 are 4:3 caption safe and must be 14:9 action safe. Meaning when the captions are show on a 4:3 monitor they won't be cut off. Bla, it's taken me 6 months to fully understand the aspect ratio issues. There's many more things going on too, IE different methods of converting etc.... I won't go into detail. But feel free to sign up to my newsletter ;)

ANYWAY! that's the reason, if it makes sense.

    Hmm
Glad I didn't ask that one!

    P.S.
    Anybody get one yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Yeah, picked up one this morning - queue was massive (Aldi Carlow) but they had loads of the TV's. It is quite-but-not-entirely-flat (certainly acceptable to me anyway), lovely picture, good sound etc. Auto-tuning is very handy. Xbox/PS2 games look great on it.

By the way, it looks exactly like the Beko set i linked to earlier on, just with a Tevion (Aldi brand) badge on the front.

That link mentions the Beko tv is 100Hz ...is the Aldi one 100Hz too?
