    Wasn't it April Fools day last year when the first announced the whole G-mail thing?

    Has it even gone public yet? or do you still need to do the silly invite thing?

    Pretty cool alright. I reckon its perfectly timed to stop at 2GB

    But....

    "But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able."

    Now, everyone thought the '1gb email account' gag was good last year, and it came true. The code behind that page (Which is pretty damn cool) confirms this

    var now = (new Date()).getTime();
    if (now < START) {
    setTimeout(updateQuota, 1000);
    } else if (now > END) {
    quota.innerHTML = 'Over 2000';
    } else {
    quota.innerHTML = format(((now - START)/(END - START)*1025) + 1025);
    setTimeout(updateQuota, 50);
    }
    }

    So errrrr, maybe it wont stop at 2 gigs!

    i still am on 0% storage. Whats the attachment limit?, maybe i should start storing things on it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

    Officially it's 10mb, but I uploaded a couple of 20mb files without any hassle..

    I dont like the whole "never delete anything again ever!" boast, it smacks of Big Brother. I *do* like the attachment upload however.

    Good joke yesterday too ;)

    I'm at 2010 megs at the moment, but when I first read this thread 5 mins ago I was at 2005 megs. Funky.

    Oh, and I've used only 4 megs but I've only recently diverted my college email to gmail.

    i think it will keep increasing but very slowly as its stuck around 2050. so i think it will keep increasing towards infinity but at a sluggish pace.
    classic marketing........................

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

    You are currently using 49 MB (2%) of your 2050 MB.

    Nice one. Its become invaluable for transporting things to and from college :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,566 ✭✭✭JTMan

    If you set your clock on you PC to some date next week then hit refresh your storage goes up to 2075 MB but does not move beyond that point!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

    You are currently using 3 MB (0%) of your 2050 MB.

    :confused:

    Now to figure out how to forward all my college mails to stop those irritating "your mailbox is nearly full" emails...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,516 ✭✭✭BrokenArrows

    In all honesty who is ever going to use 1 or 2GB for mail storage. If they are going to offer this type of space they might as well give a proper file storage system.

    The only way i believe that this will happen is if sometone gets spammed by every spaming company and never deletes any of it.

    I think it would be a very close minded view to think you well "never" reach 2GB's. Give it 10yrs when majority of the world has 100mbs broadband*, (Ireland should have reached 8mbs) and then we'll see how long the 2GB space will last. In the immidate future, yeh it would take some doing to reach that amount!

    *Maybe a Slight Exaggeration....Maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

    Yeah, I've seen a few user accounts where I used to work with several gigs of mail built up over a few years -- all legit business stuff too, as we used to filter out most attachments.

    I wouldn't say the majority of the world, but 100Mbps+ domestic connections will be fairly common in countries like Norway, Netherlands, South Korea etc.

    Does anybody not think that 1Gb is plenty??

    I've used 125 MB (6%) of my 2053 MB.
    lol and since I refreshed the page it went from 2050 to 2053mg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

    Its really just a feature that is marketable. Google are aware that only a minute percentage of gmail users will ever have used 1000mbs of space and with high capacity hard drives getting cheaper by the minute then it wouldnt be that hard for google to be able to promise more!

    If they can boast 2.5gb or so of email storage space then it will atrract even more people away from Hotmail, Yahoo and other email providers in the future.

    Yup, at this rate, aside from the privacy concerns, I can't understand why anyone would use hotmail. Actually, even before Gmail, I couldn't understand, because all they offered was a paltry 2mb compared to the 5mb that most providers offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,516 ✭✭✭BrokenArrows

    Thats a pretty sweet program.

    var CP = [
    [ 1112331600000, 1025 ],
    [ 1112439600000, 2050 ],
    [ 1113062400000, 2075 ]
    ];

    seems like it's gonna stop at 2075mb

    That gmail storage sounds cool - only thing is I don't have admin rights on my pc at work to take advantage of it. I can't extract the zip files to install it. Is there any way around this? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭D

    Well even though I have a gmail accountI still use my hotmail account, although I got the free upgrade to 250mb. That was thanks to a thread in bargin alerts, where it shows you how irish people can get theirs upgraded.
    I basically needs you to change your address to florida and then you qualify.

    If 1gb was plenty you wouldnt ahve been saying that in 8 years when you would ahve reached your 1gb limit! (assuming you've had gmail for a year, which is unlikely!)

    Also that code i posted just said that i didnt think it would stop at 2gigs (and it didnt)
