I was talking to Regi earlier, and he was wondering if we should have a sys-admin type board. And if we should, should it be a separate board, or should this board become sysadmin/security.

    Opinions?

there isn't really THAT many sys-admin posts here, to require a seperate board, but then if a new board was set up, it might increase posts on the subject.

i for one would be infavour of a seperate board, as i'm really interested in running networks and such.

Well, I think there aren't too many sysadmin posts because there isn't anywhere that seems to fit it. I think it could work out!

I think they'd probably pick someone who actually is a sysadmin to do it smile.gif

oh and, sounds like a nice change of direction.

would definitely be interested in the sysadmin type board as long as it could be moderated with an iron fist smile.gif

part of me says, keep it here till it grows, and just change the name of the forum to reflect it, and the other part says make a new forum. I think the former part is the best idea.

Also, X_OR, I've decided that posts listing sites defaced with no interesting or informative content should be deleted without comment. The majority of people seem to be in favour of it.

If people want to discuss a particular crack/defacement in a responsible manner, feel free, but "wayhey, look at me and my mates" posts should be cut.

Yep, sysadmin board is a great idea, I'd hope that a lot of general help on day-to-day sysadmin stuff would be posted as well, not just cut and pastes from bugtraq or whatever.

My own personal take on this is that security applies at least as much to programming as it does to system administration, which is the one thing I would have against grouping the subjects like that. That's not to say it's a bad idea though.

Yeah a sys admin board would be very interesting. Hopefully it'll take off a bit faster than the security board did wink.gif

However Programming does have its own forum, although it always seems to be rife with Java krud so I rarely go there tongue.gif

Best bet would be to rename this Administraton/security perhaps, and then gague how popular the subjencts get in time.

hmm... /me wonders if these boards could do with a babble or drivel to cater for the, eh, general drivel, or is that what trolls is for ?

My point is that security/admin doesn't make any more sense to me than security/programming, if you see what I mean ...

    I understand you dear...

Security is more then just patches etc. etc.

General day to day admin stuff like stupid printers and backups are very far removed from security generally.

If it doesn't involve security ,It doesn't belong here.

I vote new forum if your into that sorta stuff.

Well I'd back a Sysadmin board ... but I seriously believe it would get less traffic than this one :-)

and I don't think it would be wise to double this board ... once you expand a boards coverage it just causes trouble ... it's like after hours ... what exactly is that for, cause imho it's for anything which doesn't go in any other board?

Anyway I like the sysadmin board idea ... but maybe a different name ( no don't have a suggestion yet ). Just sysadmin would kinda reduce the scope to merely admins ... yes techinical everybody is the admin of their home puter smile.gif. I think should lay down the scope of the board then get a better name...

Reading through these posts (don't ask me y) I got a terrible urge to run a BBS like the good aul days. Is ne1 interested? an old dos based .bat based gui dialup with all those old proggies u saved up for 6 months to send off and get on 'Treasure Chest' Shareware. It would be sooo much fun smile.gif

    Aren't BBS's dead?

It would probably be more beneficial to run a *nix box for people to log into and mess around on.

    Just a side-note.
The Technology->Admin board seems like a badly named one. As I assumed when I joined boards that it was for sys admins.
If there was a tech->sysadmin board it could become even more confusing.

Why is the Admin board in technolgy at all?
Perhaps it could be changed to something like suggestions and put on it's own like work or for sale?

    Just a thought,

    - Kevin

good point ... move admin to games

I thinkthe new board should more clearly cover aspect of Computer software ... the tech board really looks only like it is for hardware and can't post any OS relate questions under programming.
