    LP:
    pros: town plans in LP guides often prove invalauble;

    cons: does recommend very touristy places eg. temple bar type places;can contain alot of fluff e.g. listings for stuff like public libraires

    RG: Pros: definetly more savvy approach to travel than LP,
    smarter picks for things like accomodation,food etc.

    Cons: lucky if you get any sort of map, descriptions of accom./restaurants can sometimes be infuriatingly brief

    Cheers man,
    I suppose handiest is to have a look in Easons at em both and then order them online somewhere.

    I've used Lonely Planet for Greece, Turkey and Scandanavia. I found that it was much better than RG but don't know how they compare for other destinations.

    What I will so though is that LP had more accurate and up-to-date info for places to eat and stay. I also found that some of the info on art, museums, archeology in the RG was factually wrong sometimes. The info in the LP was pretty much spot on. Also, I thought the maps were much better in the LP.

    Enjoy your trip :)

    Sorry, just one last thing I thought of, check the date of publication - when I got mine, the sales assistant advised me to wait a few weeks till the new edition came out. I don't think new editions come out every year so depending what kind of info you're using the book for, you might be best to pick whichever was published more recently.

    I've always preferred Lonely Planet myself, both for the maps and the general layout. Another plus is that their website contains updates for the books and is bang up to date, so it's worth checking before heading off. Proved handy when going to South Africa and saved us making an unecessary trip to a place that was closed for part of the time we were there.

    They both have pros and cons, head down to your local library and have a browse through their travel guides before making a decision on which to buy....
