Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been handed a two-match touchline ban by UEFA's control and disciplinary body in Nyon.

Chelsea, Mourinho, his assistant Steve Clarke and security official Les Miles were charged by UEFA with bringing the game into disrepute following the first leg of their Champions League tie in Barcelona.

They had claimed Barca coach Frank Rijkaard entered referee Anders Frisk's changing room during the half-time interval.

Along with the ban - which would see Mourinho unable to "contact" his team before, during or after the two legs of the quarter-final against Bayern Munich - the Portuguese boss was fined 20,000 Swiss francs (around £9,000).

Chelsea, who must be informed in writing of UEFA's decision before deciding whether to appeal, were fined 75,000 Swiss francs (£33,000) and Clarke and Miles reprimanded.

Chelsea plc chairman Bruce Buck, club secretary Dave Barnard and QC Jim Thurman, a barrister specialising in football charges cases, were in Nyon to represent the club at the hearing.

a mere slap on the wrist, don't think UEFA wanted to risk a harsher punishment in case they actually had to properly investigate the allegation that Frisk was spoken to Rijkaard.

    seems like a reasonable punishment

Well considering JM did a u turn and publicly stated that he actually didnt see Rijkaard enter into a room with Frisk there wasnt much to investigate

very leniant IMO.. considering his actions led to the resignation of a top referee and the replacement of said referee in 2nd leg match .. I bet Frisk is dismayed at the punishment

Lads this could easily knock them out of the CL.
Mourinho has something special with his link to the team, and if he can't talk to them at all for the entire two matches, I think it could be the turning point inwho wins the match. This is a massive blow to Chelsea imo

Was on radio that he got a similiar ban before and used walkie talkie's and headset to communicate with the bench!!! I bet he will have some trick to keep in contact with everyone......

Would be a tad risky - if proved he would effectively be breaking the ban and disobeying UEFA would lead to more sanctions. You can bet your bottom dollar that he will very much under the media spotlight.

    UEFA Wording
As far as the touchline ban is concerned, Article 70 para 2 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations states: 'A team manager/coach who is suspended from carrying out his function may follow the match for which he is suspended from the stands only. He is not allowed in the dressing room, tunnel or technical area before and during the match nor is he allowed to get in contact with his team

so if he has someone sitting in the stand with him - can they then be in contact with the team - I would argue not.

He cannot be in contact with the team, thats the ruling. The ruling was specifically warded so this exact situation would come about, I'd like him to disobey it, it'll result in a serious ban

"nor is he allowed to get in contact with his team " is the important phrase - it usually afaik just specifies where they can go - this is very explicitly put.

Sorry meant the bench....as far as I know he can still give directions to the bench cant he?????

He would technically still be in contact with the team. a very grey area methinks.

Yeah, surely if he sends message to the bench he breaks the 'nor is he allowed to get in contact with his team' part of the regulation?

is this the normal thing to do nowadays in regard to a touchline ban or is still some percieved feud between chelsea and uefa being continued by some heavy handedness?

Havent a clue of rules here but was on BBC Radio 1 that he done that before so must be allowed......

I stand corrected but before it just specified the location - this explicitly forbids communication. I think Fifa are just hoping he tries walkie-talkies or phones.

    from bbc
There are reports Uefa will detail an official to stay with Mourinho during his two-match suspension, imposed for incidents during the first leg of the Champions League meeting with Barcelona in the Nou Camp on 23 February.

lucky person whoever gets this job :D

    LOL :D

yeah right boy, regardless of the ban there is nothing in the rules or the wording of the punishment that states that Mourinho cannot make any comments to anyone about the state of play, he'll happily pass on his instructions to the bench indirectly.

If anything it'll just galvanise the team to play as well as they can.

This is getting stupid, maybe UEFA should have him tied up like Hannibal Lecter during the match?

Growler, I'm sure your right that he'll be in contact indirectly. I'm sure I've seen managers who have been given a touchline ban using headsets - maybe I'm remembering wrong though.

We'll not know how this effects Chelsea for sure until the night of the games.

Yeah I have seen it too, but normally there is no provision against communication with the team. This is there specifccally to stop any communication

Martin o'neil wasnt allowed communicate with his team when he was banned afaik. So this is the same, although if he really wants to it will be the same.

One of the big things Maureen brings to his team is his motivational skills. They have lost that. Even with walkie talkies it no where near the same. If they dont get a good result at stanford brigde a lose and early goal away, i can see them crumble.
