    Hi

There is a load of music on my machine that seems to have been protected by Real player.

I would like to use this music with another application

Is there any way to unprotect this music?

    Thanks

What do you mean by protected, or do you mean associated? Meaning if you doubleclick the file it starts with Real player

If that's the case, in windows explorer, right click on the file, select "open with" and choose program. Now from your list select the appropriate program, e.g. winamp (or browse for it) and click the box "always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

The music is protected in some way by Realplayer

Other applications don't even recognise the files

I have heard mention of DRM protection with Windows Media Player and assume it is something similar.

Was wondering if anyone knew an application that would unprotect these songs as I would like to be able to use them on an MP3 player but neither it nor any application I use can open these files

Don't have real player on the machine anymore so I don't know if it can unprotect them itself.

I don't like Real Player, it caused a lot of problems on the machine

That was why I was hoping that someone here would know a way around it

What type of files are they ? If they may be .rm which won't play on an mp3 player. BTW, in the free software sticky there's a link for Real Alternative, much better than the real Real software. There's plenty of tools to convert rm to mp3 but I can't seem to find any free ones, maybe someone else knows one

    try real alternative. (google)

What filename do the files have?

    They are .rmx files

Not worried about playing them on the pc but would like to convert them to MP3, WAV etc so that I could play them on an MP3 player

I have an Archos AV420 and the girl friend has an iPod, would like to be able to play them on both

Simple solution - burn them onto a normal audio CD (no good just saving them on the CD as a .rax file) and re-rip them as mp3's or whatever.

You will lose a little bit of quality, but it is not noticable.

Thanks will try that this evening

Apologies for asking a stupid question without trying out all my options first but am mental at work and don't have a net connection at home so wasn't able to do a search or have time to think things through.

There is a fair bit of music so I am going to waste a lot of CD's

CDRW? May be slower but better for the environment.

Burn it to a virtual image recorder (in nero) then mount using trial of Alcohol 120%

    No cd's burned at all.

or try www.daemontools.cc for a free virtual drive.

It's not a stupid question. It does take a bit of thinking to figure out that once you copy protected files to a normal audio CD, they lose that protection, so don't worry about it. :)
