    Hi
I am planning to lay a back garden patio which will only have light pedestrian traffic using slabs 18 inches approx . From what I can see there seems to be differing opinions regarding the foundation required. How much sand and is crushed stone really necessary ? Also some websites advise putting mortar blobs on the corners and middle of the slabs. This seems a bit excessive. Any sensible advice on what's required ?

    Hi Casey Jones,

Here is an interesting little tutorial for your patio,

The sand is for bedding and leveling your slabs easily, the crushed stone is to give you good drainage and a solid foundation for your patio slabs . Have you considered a wooden decking , you can achieve some excellent results with the wide range of deck materials, posts, d rails ect.
