    Oi!
Can anyone recommend a decent pair of MMA gloves that I can get without getting ripped off by some Brazilian site? I've scoped around and found next to nothing in Ireland.
Blitz in England, who I get my kids boxing gloves off (and are reasonable$ for reasonable quality) have a couple of pairs available but you never know.

    Recomendations anyone?

I've got the Viper gloves.. Never had a problem with them. Secure and a nice fit.

They are cheap too. Like 20 quid I think.

Been using the Rogue gloves from mlsports.co.uk, they're pretty good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

    I agree with the Timster!!!

I have a nice blue pair of Rogues from www.mlsports.co.uk!

If you want the best in the business I say go with the fairtex gloves they are sweet gloves! www.fairtex.com AFAIK!

with or with out a thumb? does it matter.

with or with out a thumb? does it matter.

Thats the million dollar question. I have Rogues which are thumbless. The thumb can feel constrictive but conversely having the thumb loop means the padding on the fist stays more firmly in place. Its really a personal decision I guess. Ive tried them both and they are brilliant gloves!

so in ur comps colum there's no rule that says u need either?

Nope. Once theyre a 4 oz. MMA glove its down to the organisers. Most major brands are accepted.

I think most modern MMA gloves are pretty much the same. Major differences are mainly how cool they look. When youre competing you dont generally notice the gloves.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Cheers boys. Probably go with the Rogues. Fairtex ones look the sh1t though, and WE ALL KNOW it's about how good you look, right?

Green gloves & a kilt. Catch someone in a kilt choke. How bizarre.

ML sports have a crazy fast delivery service. As for colour....?

    Do you want
    yellow----King of the Cage
    black

    blue
    Pride
    green
    Paddy Irishman
    Red
    bloody fists!

Also click on the following Ouano Website and go to the size chart to get a reasonably ok equivalent size!

We got Vipers when we started fighting MMA (about 4 of us). After less than two months of use they were starting to fray and the layers were separating. Within 4 months they were too badly decayed to be used and we upgraded to harbs. I can't NOT reccomend vipers enough.

I'd have to say I agree with the rogues. I got the blue ones( just watch what size your getting if your going to wrap your hands), and their shinpads are pretty good too, in case your wondering. I hopin to give them their first outing in May down in Cork :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

I've never felt a glove as nice as Harbingers (properly tailored with the palm bar unstitched and removed, not cut off the way some people do).

There has been quite a few Rogues sported in the League so far, I guess a lot of it is down to taste. At the moment I prefer harbs.
What division are you going to be in Cletus?

Where can i get a pair of Harbingers.? Are they over the internet only.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

I was all set on the rogues and now ....

I've heard the Harbingers were the business, but reckon I'll go with the rogues, or the fairtex, or the rogues, or the harbingers...... aw crap.

Any problems with hand wrap on any of them? I've a poxed wrist (medical term there) that means I've to wrap 100% of the time even for light work.

just to confuse you even further....i train with alot of guys who use these gloves and they are by far the best value on the market.

I have the Medium size Rogues. I've a pair of little girls hands and I'd struggle to wrap them and put them into the gloves so you'd be best going for the large size I'd say.

We share an affliction Tim :) . Large set of rogues winging their way to me as we speak. Thanks for all the input folks!

The TXMMA gloves are sweet. Theyre pretty much the same as the Ouano UFC gloves. Didnt know they had any left in stock. Got mine last May.

In training, the wrist wrap on my harbs usually begin to elongate, spiral up my arm away from my wrist. I haven't really found this a problem. In competition we've just tapped the wrist and no probs at all.

I weigh in at 77.3, so welterweight. I'm lookin forward to it. heard you were down in Limerick with Shane last Saturday, sorry I missed it, maybe next time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭mark.leonard

So you are a Waza Kai guy then? Yeah, Saturday is cool, Shane has a really heavy top game and we had some good rolls. Got them to do a few rounds of full rules MMA at the end as well and it was great crack. We are planning on making it down there again once we can get a mutually acceptable date. I'll let you know on here when we travel to Limerick again.

Cheers Mark, i look forward to it. hopefully I wont be working again. Shane's guard is pretty good as well( I should know, I spend long enough there :D ) are you planning on bringing any of your lads down

I like the Harbingers once I took the palm bar out of them!
Good heavy leather gloves, some dislike the enclosed palm,YMMV!
I hear talc is good for the sweating in closed gloves and tape sorts the creep of the wrist wraps! A top glove for years of use, even if it's just for twatting a heavy bag! :)

Anyone care to read a road test? Or should I bother my arse?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,190 ✭✭✭cletus

    Yeah sure,
What did you go with and what are they like (although most of the gloves recommended are good quality)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Well, I only need a small invitation to talk (or type for that matter) so I'll give you a basic rundown. Maybe we could open an equipment review thread????

Basically these are my first MMA gloves, so a lot of what I'm writing is based on my striking equipment experience.
    Rogue MMA Gloves from mlsports.co.uk
    Firstly, the price............
Including delivery it came to about 50 euro a pair (I ordered 2, one for a mate) after exchange from sterling. About middling in terms of price. A good quality pair of boxing gloves (Top ten, Everlast) might cost you anything from 80 plus, so taking that into account and the more complex design required for the MMA gloves, I think it's fair enough.
    The look.......
Today Barry is modelling the Rogues in dayglo yellow, to match the whites of his eyes.........
Pretty good, Chris Brennan KOTC style! There's a bit of a ZZ-Top flame thing going on with the Rogue logo, but I'll forgive it as it helped make my mind up on the training music. 'She got legs.......'
    Fit/Comfort....
Whoa.... you mean I have to MAKE a fist? Shucks. Anyone new to MMA from a striking background probably has the same initial feeling when they strap on their first pair. But apart from the strange feeling of being padded up but still having fingers and palms: these feel snug enough around the wrist, good support from the wrap which isn't elasticated- good because I find that's always the first thing to go on my gloves. There was an initial stiff feeling across the top of the knuckles, but this dissappeared after the first session.
I had some concern about wrapping my messed up wrist. There seemed to be plenty of room initially for hand wrap, but the more I trained the less blood there was in my extremities of that hand! Eventually I had to lose the wrap. As I said before though, the wrist support on the gloves themselves is pretty good, so my injury was still quite comfortable. Just the same with a large size glove, you would expect a bit of room for wrapping, especially since I have little girly hands! Thats a small criticism though.
    The road test.....
Striking: Fairly comfortable and light not too much difference to your bare knuckle really. You really notice the difference between these and boxing gloves on connection. If you connect badly in particular. But that's obvious.
Grappling: We went for about twenty minutes all in all. Apart for a brief problem with the aforementioned hand wrap, they stayed exactly where they were supposed to even in the tighter situations. They're quite slimline and snug to the knuckles so theres very little problem with snagging etc. I would still like to see them a bit snugger at the fingers though as they are a little baggy there. To be honest though, and this is probably the best thing I can say about them, on the ground and grappling is where I noticed I had them on the least.

Overall, a good quality glove at a reasonable price.

Have to revive this thread as I wrestle with decisions as to what gloves to get.
Harbringers seem to have the most trusted rep as far as I can tell. Harbinger 320 Bag Glove WristWrap (Black)- this is the one isn't it? Couple of concerns are- they look quite bulky, anyone find this so? They have padding quite far down the fingers. Does this put the hand naturally into a fist? would it inhibit keeping the wrist cocked, fingers straight, kung fu hand position?
with them on, could you take another hand wearing them, and apply a wrist lock easily enough?
40 EnglishPounds on mlsports.co.uk, where you got your gloves roper
40 dollers on Amazon.com. Not bad.

I still don't own my own pair of mma gloves, which of course means i have worn pretty much every type in some sort of compitition, due to the nature of the beg, borrow or steal approach. And i have to say for comfort and a feeling of sheer badassery, you just can't beat plain black harbs.

That's a fairly solid recomendation. I've not heard bad about them yet. Aside from sheer badassery, the comfort- could you say they don't interfere much with your grappling ability, or someones ability to grapple with you, n ave at your wrist etc? There are lots of differant harbringers, it is the 320 Bag Glove WristWrap. Isn't it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 334 ✭✭TwoKingMick

I really dont think in the thick of a proper fight you can feel the difference between having a bare palm or not, and you definatly can't tell the difference between thumbless and thumb having (or whatever the opposite of thumbless is, thumbed perhaps?). I couldn't tell you what exact stlye they are, ask colm, i usually steal his.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

did you order the harbingers from here: here:? BIt expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭patjunfa

I ordered mine from AMAS, fairly soon after that last post, so 6 weeks or so. I'm waiting impaitently for them now. They say they should have arrived, wondering weather the bastards in customs are playing with them
