Weird thing on a DVR

I work as a security supervisor for a small company. We have a Sensormatic / Intellex DVR installed. I was reviewing alarms for last Thursday morning when I came accross a light floating accross an external IR camera. Just as it came into shot it changed shape and then moved off screen in the oppisate direction from where it had come. A few minuets latter it came back into frame and moved back accross the screen to where it started. I have no idea what it was but if anybody can take a look at it for me I would be happy to put the clip on a CD and post it. It only lasted about 3 minuets.

no way you can put it online at all? At the very least take a screenshot of it and post the image. Probably a bug or something but lets take a look.

Will download it tomorrow and see how big it is and might post it somewhere for download. Will get back to you tomorrow night.

Having worked in security too I know that moths and bigger bugs can look like glowing orbs flying around in front of an IR camera. The fact that the whole picture looks a bit 'blair witchy' can make it look pretty convincing too. Still it would be interesting to see some clips or stills to have a good look, just because I only ever saw moths doesn't mean that they're all that's out there .

I'm very interested, and have broadband, so please try to get it up for download somewhere. You could just make a bit-torrent now that I think of it.

Post it here, I'd like to see it too.

I have uploaded a file to the following url http://www.esatclear.ie/~mcummins/video.zip
It is 6.55mb and includes the img file and a player from Sensormatic called Intellex. For those of you who can open the file yourselves then the img file is also located here at http://www.esatclear.ie/~mcummins/video.img Have fun guys and let me know what you think. If it is a spider or a moth I cannot see legs and itstays pretty uniform in shape.

    WTF?

That's spooky looking. Can't put that down to a moth.

that is very weird. Id be a little skeptical unless it was verified or i was the one who caught it on tape. But its amazing looking. It doesnt move naturally, looks like its controlled. Also the little one that buzzes in from the side is Bright, See the way the compression flickers trying to compensate?

Does anyone else find it odd that something so clearly very bright doesn't cause any reflected light? Nothing else in the video is lit up by the big glowing orb.

Am I the only one having problems playing this ? The intellex player seems to find the database and the incident/img file but it doesn't seem to want to play it for me.

    edit: Got it now.

The smaller one definitely looks like some kind of winged flying insect, you can almost make out the wings flapping as you watch it move, and the flight path kind of seems insectish too.

    Hrmmmm

I sorta see outlines that suggest tampering or something being there. (red outline)

and is that a shadow (yellow outline)?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Looking closely at the 'shadow', it's colouring seems to match the stains you can see in the steps higher up the image and it doesn't seem to move at all throughout the whole clip which is over a 35 minute period. It does look really like someone holding something up to the camera though.

I'm going to guess aswell that the image wasn't digitally tampered with, there seem to be stationary spots visibly in the object which look like dirt on the camera lens or something. As the object moves they stay at exactly the same place in the image, altough I can't make them out when the object has moved away.

I checked out the video lads, looks impressive enough... reminds me of a very good orb video.

I'm useless at video verification, and couldn't notice the spots, shadows or reflections at all (although I only watched it a couple of times), so I'm interested in what conclusions you all come to.

If it appears genuine enough, perhaps it should be sent to a specialist paranormal site focussing on orbs?

    Just looked at it again.

It *could* be two water droplets if the wind was strong enough.

Further information I can give you. The DVR is set to go to alarm mode during certin times and record what it sees through sensing movement and or light change. I can not verify weather someone was standing out of range of the lens using a torch but the way the "orb" changed shape at the begining would suggest that it was not a torch. Although the camera itself is water proof it is in a housing with no glass front on it as this would have reflected the IR leds therefor water could not have gotten into it. It was not particularly windy on the morning in question and as you can see from the steps it was dry, not raining. The staggering movement is because the DVR is set to record 50fps so to save space on its hard drive.
I can guarentee you that no digital enhancment has taken place. The clip you see is as it was taken from the DVR to which I am the only person on site who has the ability to work it. I have no problem in sending a copy of this to anybody by mail. Am in Galway so if anyone wants to see the actual CD let me know.
    Regards.

Thats messed up! At a loss to explain it myself. Maybe a bug crawling over the lens but it wouldnt be bright like that surely?

I'm inclined to think it's a spider. As for the glow quality the other moving object is probably a fly and that's glowy too so I'd imagine a spider spinning a web would show up the same.

I did see a spider on the camera on a different occasion but in that case the spiders legs were very visable and did not move in the same manner ie it moved with out direction. It went all over the place. This thing for want of a better word went pretty much in a straight line. If it did not look like it flowed over the railings I myself would say it was a hedgehog or a badger.

Like a the spoke of a web ? :) It was this straight line motion that caught me and then the un-liquid motion that made me think of a spider. I'm thinking that it's a spider doing a probe spin to check the place out for making a web. I don't think the spider's on the lens. I think it's on a line in front of the camera.

Agreed - there also seems to be a knat on the first pass - the glow could be explained by a security halogen - is it triggered by the IR motion detector??

:D Back in work tomorrow so I will see if I can locate a spider on the DVR. But it does look way different because you can see its legs but I am not saying no to the fact that it could be some sort of insect.

There are no other lights in the area close enough to effect the camera hence the IR camera been put up.

    Hi All,
Went back to the DVR today and found some more clips. One of them is either an owl or a moth as you can see the wings. The second is a spider as you can see its legs and I cant remember what the third is. My point been that these although have the same brightness you can make them out as a moth or an owl and a spider. The spider is all over the place not going in a straight line at all. Other then that I cant say. The new images are located at the same url and the file is called new clips.zip www.esatclear.ie/~mcummins/new_clips.zip .
    Have fun.
    Martin.
