I went down to it and had a good time. It was my first tourney but i thought it was organized well. The blinds where going up a bit fast i thought. Made it to the final two tables and went out in about 15/16th

What are the VC Poker challenges - sounds slightly informal so might be up my street cos I want to start playing some tournies but don't think I'm ready for the big formal tournies or casinos just yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 328 ✭✭Fathead

    its informal allright..
alot of the players there had never played before . its mostly to promote the eb site all the money goes into the prize pool and when your knocked out you get a goodie bag pens cards mouse mat etc. it was good fun although i brought the girlfriend along and she lasted a lot longer than me finishing in the top 15 or so pretty embarresing to say the least. i'll be going again as its good fun and an easy way to start playing for real

Yea 2 of my mates where on that tables with us. One of them getting knocked out when he went all in with A,K suited and lost too Q,3 off suite! Other one was still there, wearing the stoner t-shirt when i left, but the blinds where eating him up.
I got knocked out with pocket 10's pre flop that lost to ace, 5... About 6/7 spots away from the final table and a hole 20 quid for finishing 8th

Found this link which gives the dates and venues of upcoming games but doesn't give the starting time but ringing the pubs themselves should get that info.

tried to get into the game in the Old Mill in Tallaght last night but was too late. When I rang them they said registration was at 7 and game started at 7.45 so I thought I was grand walking in at 7.20. No way Mourinho - all 120 seats gone at that stage and 50 people were turned away....bummer but lesson learned.

Looked like a decent enough setup - those octagonal tables that only fit 8 players though. the hot chick with the fine pins running it mentioned something about the list being published in The Star on a Monday which explains the popularity. Reckon I'll be heading to one soon enough and will let yous know what I make of it.

I went to the one tonight in Pembroke Cricket Club. I thought it was a 10€ rebuy, but it was a freezout, my mistake.

Initial thoughts, 52 runners, winner gets 200€, first 8 paid, not worth my while. But I showed with a friend, so we might as well play.

The organisation was very poor, there were four (?) people from VC there, one was the dyed blonde, bits hanging out for registering, fair enough.

There was a guy organising it, he was the same as the rest, either no idea, or couldn't care less, I never worked it out.

The crowd was a mix of 4-5 could play, 10-14 had seen it on telly, attended these events, and were masters, and the rest were students/members of the Cricket club. The rules were printed, but never followed, blinds were a mystery, bets were random, anything went.

For example. My friend gets to the last 14, one of the VC is dealing, the wrong person gets moved to the other table, the blinds are in the wrong place. It's 2k-4k, the big blind raises 5k, the dealer says nothing despite being prompted that the raises should be multiples of the BB, he couldn't care less.

The last table was comical, there's a student type, and a idiot plus 5 others left. The student has studied his Sky Channel and is riffling his chips on the table every 30 seconds, you have no idea if he's in or out of a pot, he's pulling long dwell up's , counting his stack out on the table, then another long dwell, the idiot is giving him plenty of gyp about being a tit. The bloke from VC comments that they never saw a row yet at these events. There's plenty of the raise/reraise/fold, then pick a card, any card, see if I have it or not ****e.

What did it for me was my mate was down to 3k, on the big blind which is 4k, all in, tells the dealer there should be a side pot, as he can't win it all. The row went on for 10 minutes. Them convincing him he can win more than he should, him trying to be honest. The crowd shouting "you better have a good hand after that ****e", like he was trying to pull a fast one,

These events are to be avoided unless pissed drunk.

I'm surprised VC have nobody at these events who can actually play Poker, the idea is good, but sending 4 shams and a bird with her tits hanging out from the marketing department is a bit of a waste of time.
