I think you need a current account to avail of a cheque book. Cheque's are soo outdated nowadays anyway. You should be able to organise a money order though, or go to Postie and get a Postal Order?

you can ask for a bank draft if you have a bank of ireland account, you dont need a chequebook or anything like that. it will cost you about €2 though.

IIRC the charges for postal orders are proportional to the amount of the order.

The bank draft should be free because of his student account. Go in give the teller the name and money. Sorted!!

I have a student account with Bank of Ireland and I have a cheque book. I pressed the order chequebook button on the ATM by mistake one day and they sent one out. I never use it though.:)

one point, you can't buy a bank draft from BOI with cash, it must come from your account, so technically you must lodge the money in their first and then buy the draft.

But what if you don't have a BOI account? Can someone not walk in "from the street" and buy a bankdraft with cash? anyone know

    not with UB anyway
all drafts must be paid for or debited from a UB a/c
so drafts cannot be issued to non-customers.

    money laundering compliance etc

Haven't you ever seen the General (martin cahill) where he goes into a bank, plonks 80,000 on the counter, asks for and gets the bank draft, and before the teller has time to move the money, cahill leaves the bank, his gang runs in and steals the money back. Hilarious!!

I hate this. They charge you 1.90 for the draft and they make you put the money through your account. So thats a lodgement and withdrawal. 20 cent each. Cost of draft no 2.30. Rip off b.astards. But what ya gonna do. I know go to ptsb!!
    SM

By the by im not plugging that bank in any way!!

And with regards the cheque book. They will charge you for each cheque unless you return them. Something like 15 cent per cheque so might be worthwhile returning them if you're not going to use them.

    "They" being the government

The "15 cent" represents government stamp duty on cheques.

when you order a cheque book of 25 cheques you are charged €3.75 - this all goes to the government
