hard drive enclosure

I bought a usb2 HDD caddy off ebay recently, but despite my best efforts, I cannot get it working:

I have 2 Different HDDs that Ive tried in the case, neither work; windows just tells me that "your new hardware has not been installed successfully"

Ive tried this out on two different computers, with two different Hard Drives (maxtor 250, maxtor 200), but I get the same old error. I have usb2, and all cables are connected properly, because the caddy lights up orange/green. The HDDs work fine as plain IDE drives.

Do I have a faulty HDD enclosure? I wont be able to return it, as I bought it abroad.

    Any advice?

make sure the hard drives are set to cable select/master.

Other than that an enclosure should work first time out of the box with no hassle.

You might just have to get a new one unfortunately.

    What os are you running?

HAve you tried finding the manufacturers website? You might be able to download a new firmware or specific drivers. Its possible that the enclosure doesnt support the drives you have tried. Not all drives (especially the bigger ones) are supported by all hdd enclosures.

You could try a smaller drive (120gb maybe) and see if that works.

Boro is most likely right ... a lot of the cheaper caddys dont support very large drives ... check paperwork or website to be sure....

Other than that you should check if your USB drivers are ok .... what operating system are you using ...if its win98 you could be in trouble

thanks for that advice. I checked the manafacturers website (unsuccfully, since it was german) for firmware/drivers, checked its specs/features on ebay. Checked compatibility. Gave up hope and opened the circuit enclosure, checked for loose wires, etc to no avail.
Then I just happened to check this thread. uberpixie said make sure it was set to master.

Such an obvious solution! It works perfect now, thanks a lot, uberpixie et al.

*edit* the drive is a little legend. cost me $5+$5 shipping on ebay, so yes, it was a cheap drive.
