That's very strange. Surely they'd want people to use it as a familiar term, increase market awareness etc. Like the use of "coke" or "google it" are familiar terms, and have increased the awareness of those products.

They obviously don't want it to become a generic term that is associated with image manipulation (which it has become).
CORRECT: The image was enhanced with Adobe® Photoshop® Elements software.

    INCORRECT: The image was photoshopped.

You can lose your trade mark if a word becomes the general term to describe somthing AFAIK.

That's all very well, but they should understand that saying "that's nice gimp work" can sometimes lead to confusion and the wrong conclusion ;)

    It happened to Hoover .
Coke have people working full time just reading stuff in case they see the word and then they send out a reminder to the author or, so it is said in the red book.

Maybe if someone was to register photoshoppage as a trade mark then adobe'd either have to acknowledge the use of the word or allow the it to be used.

This is very true, and Google aint too happy about becoming a verb either.
Don't think you would be allowed register 'photoshoppage' as a trade mark, as it's too similar to photoshop (ref. Lindows)
Incidentally, Neowin have details of the newer version of Photoshop here

A generic term is a word or phrase that is or has come to be the common term associated with or known as a particular category of goods or services to which it relates, thereby ceasing to function as an indicator of origin. For example, “clock” is a generic term for timepieces. Generic designations are not registrable or protectable. A trademark may potentially become generic if it becomes so widely known and used with a particular category of goods or services as to designate the category of goods or services. In such instances, the "mark" will not be registrable and a previous registration for such a "mark" may be subject to cancellation by a third party. Examples of marks that have become generic over time include “escalator,” “linoleum,” “zipper” and “yo-yo.” This loss of trademark status is sometimes referred to as “genericide.” It should be noted that what is generic in one country may not necessarily be generic in another, for example, the designation ASPIRIN is generic in the U.S. but is not in other countries.

I doubt that tbh, I'd say the lawyers aren't too happy but the techies are delighted. Trademark enforcement is as much about being seen to crack down as anything else.

Photoshoppage. Hmm, maybe it should be called Rasterbation.

The subject of renaming the forum came up before, but no changes were made.

calling the forum "photoshoppage" does tie it too much with the one product when there are numerous others out there.

How about renaming the forum: Gimpage?

    Or: cut-and-paste-u-like?

FYI, the forum has already changed names, it used to be "Pix'n'Mix". It's not changing again anytime soon.
