Port Protect and the like

Been using port protect for a while and it seems to know its stuff- occasionally it will pop up warning me of an attempted WinNuke or B.O. attack on port # whatever...

The thing is, I'm wondering- while it gives plenty of options for tracking down and/or reporting these attackers, does it actually close off those ports and/or stop the attack its reporting...

I've installed ZoneAlarm also- anyone know if this is any better? I know these programs are good at detecting and reporting attempted attacks- just do they stop em successfully?...

    Cheers in advance,

    Well speaking for Zonealarm...
I've noticed its blocking just about everything...
The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer (ICMP Echo Request ('Ping')) from ***.***.**.**.
Stealth-mode on unused ports and so on.
But as for how it stands up against other fw proggies I don't know.

The problem I notice though, is seeing alerts about other systems trying to connect on TCP Port 14742 or whatever, and not knowing weather to think it's out of the ordinary or not.
But they get blocked and no response is sent, which is nice.

Also, same question as above, but regarding BlackIce.

....but don't we all know the feeling of driving to town and suddenly realizing you still have your barn boots on....or reaching over to pick up carrots at the store and having alfalfa fall out of your hair.....

Anyhoo Linux is nice if it supports your hardware, but if (like me) it doesn't support your soundcard (or any of your other sound cards) then you'll be surfing in silence (which is a pain in the t!ts).
I've got mandrake on my 2nd HD, but Windoze is my primary OS.

And yes, I do have a pic of bill gates as my desktop wallpaper.
    Hurrah for Microsoft!
    *hugs bill gates*

    Another one is BlackICE defender.

It only listens for incoming attacks though :/ You will need a good virus checker or monitor your ports to see if you have a trojan running.

It does however lock off the connection if someone is scanning/attacking, it also tells you the kind of attack and details on it along with who's doing it and packet logging (so you can examine the packets).

    LOL
Just for the record, I've never used those manky windows bitmaps as wallpaper smile.gif
They go bye bye right after a fresh install.
Mostly I use scans of holiday photos or anything else that catches my fancy (FHM Models and nice renderings from 3d sites tongue.gif)

I'm not too bothered really though, since my desktop is hidden by a mass of windows most of the time.

    yoink
