Slow IOL BB

    Anyone experiencing very slow performance from IOL BB? I'm from the Longford area and last Saturday and part of Sunday it was the same. Sites taking an age to come up if they even come up at all. And also losing about 20% of packets to boards.ie. Anyone tell me the IOL DNS server so I can run a tracert ping on that,

    The pings are not elevated 30ms which is around average. Just the fact that 1 in every 4 packets is lost meaning websites just will not load or take forever and the next day to.

    Cheers,
    X

    From memory I setup the DNS servers on my comp to:

    192.111.39.1
    192.111.39.4

    Give those a try and see what happens.

    Also packet loss does not affect any TCP/IP connections.

    How would that be, if you don't receive the packets requested your connection needs to send for them again or you won't get the complete set of data. All this slows down connections.

    It's been a long time since I have studied TCP/IP in any great depth but one of the disadvantages of it was that it carried greater overhead because it needed to keep track of packets and have some way of reporting if a packet was lost so they could they could be recovered by retransmission.

    If 1 in every 4 packets is lost then it requires for each of those packets to be resent for.

    Good to know. I was wondering what on earth was going on. It was incredibly annoying! :)

    Precisely.
    Pages will always load on tcp/ip.
    Also 1 in 4 being lost increases the time the page takes to load by 25% of normal load time. So it wouldnt take much longer.

    IOL working fine for me today. No issues at all...

    Check out these ping results for name servers.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Ping statistics for 192.111.39.1:

    Packets: Sent = 1000, Received = 692, Lost = 308 (30% loss),

    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

    Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 2876ms, Average = 46ms

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Ping statistics for 192.111.39.4:

    Packets: Sent = 1000, Received = 671, Lost = 329 (32% loss),

    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

    Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 1028ms, Average = 42ms

    Seems to only have problems during the weekend?

    Got a response from IOL regarding issue. Small, non descript but basically admitting fault.

    Dear Russell,

    This is a known issue and has been logged with our networks team. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    I'd like to know why it only happens during a Sunday.
