Over heating PC

Ok, so I have figured out why Half Life 1 stutters for me every couple of seconds, I downloaded speedfan, and sure as sure when I play halflife my HD0 temperature goes from 30'ies to 54 or so. This is when the lag starts.

Anyway, the problem is, my pc is a dell laptop, and it didnt get shipped to me this way, its my own fault somehow. Does anyone know how this could have happened? Could it simply be dirt?

    Any practical solutions?

For the moment I have the system suspended a bit higher than normal, and put icepacks underneath(dunno if this a good idea :P).

    System spec:
    Dell Insipiron 5150
    CPU: Pentium 4 mobile 2.8ghz
    Gfx: Geforce FX Go5200
    Sound: Alactel '97 (onboard)
    30gb HardDrive

If theres anything else you need to know just ask

I'd say dirt in the fan is the most likely cause.

If it's still under warrenty, Dell should replace the fan for you.

I'd say dirt too, i had a similiar problem...and that was the cause

A simple blow into the fans might sort it.

54o isn't that hot, but at the same it should take the cpu about 10minutes to reach that temperature under usage. If it's going up faster than that, it's clogged inlet/outlet.
Bear in mind that the cpu is a desktop one so it will run hot regardless.
What other bottlenecks have you in your system...got enough RAM?

Also if you have speed fan why not operate the fans manually or set them to come on at a lower temperature

Dell have a config utility that is installed on a little partition at the start of the drive. You can make your fan go ultra-speed, and blow out all that dirt.

You will need a boot loader to get into it though

..and if you stick a pair of wings on it, it doubles as a microlight ;)

Nope, its setup on dell laptops, you simply need the "one time boot menu". f12 during the bios post if i remember correctly
