Tulips

About 5-6 yrs ago, we bought a bag of mixed coloured tulips in Amsterdam (as you do). The first year they came up they were all yellow and continued to be yellow for the next few years after that. We just put it down to the bag was labelled incorrectly.
So 2 yrs ago to mix up the colour, we bought a bag of red tulips and planted them in. The next year they came up red, but this year it’s all yellow again.
Wife says it’s something to do with them pollinating, but I’ve seen tulip displays at the side of motorways with different colours planted all beside each other.
    Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of (and I'm not a gardener, so I may be WAY off) is that the ph of the soil is affecting the plants. I know with certain plants, they either grow pink or blue depending on the ph of the soil.
