From what I've heard the number of J1 students this year is lower than usual so you should not have as much foreign competition, but *good* jobs in NY are hard to get during the summer. Thing to remember is keep looking and pushing yourself. It also depends on what you wantto do, eg. work a lot and get paid well, or work to live and bum around.
And if you have a VISA it will be easier, eg. J1

thanks, im not getting a J1 as it is my last year in college this year so i cant get it what are the alternatives to J1

You're taking a big risk going to the US these days and working without a visa.

You can get a J1 in your final year now. You just need to prove that you'll be coming back next year to do a postgrad course, so I think if you apply for a masters course that might count as proof.

The only alternative to a J1 is a H2B visa.

chances of getting a visa to america apart from j1 or marriage are extremelyt low.
know someone who got j1 after graduating the way penexpers says though.

why dont you just go over and book your flight for the end of the summer.
as far as i know you can visit for up to 3 months or something at a time.
you cant work however, so unless you have a work visa, you will probably get the crappy student type jobs.
but i guess thats what you want right?

just dont go over the boarder to canada!

What I hear from other J1ers is that there are loads of jobs in long beach, for people with or without a J1. I went to New York City last year with a J1 and ended up working illegally! It takes about 8 weeks to get a social security number even when you have a J1 and most companies wont take you on without the SS no. So dont worry about it. Go over, and if you look hard enough you will get a job. Plenty of people have done it before you.

Thet is the dumbest advice you should listen to O/P

Disregard the first two lines in that post!

Sheesh... in this day and age and all?

US Immigration will, if you tell them you want to stay in their country for three months without working, expect you to have a wad of cash roughly equal to three months average pay (and then some probably) on you as you walk thru their borders, otherwise they'll think something is up.

These guys are grumpy! They imprison/deport dozens of people everyday.

Best advice is as you say, if you can't get a proper visa, just get a ten-day return ticket, then change it to 89 days after you entered, just make sure you are NOT in the USA for day 91 or you'll never get back in!

In and around NY you should be able to fall into a building/moving job no bother.

If you happen to play GAA you'll be sorted! I didn't unfortunately \o/
