CTYI Chat Room

    Right well I thought might be an idea to post (and sticky) some instructions on how to get into the chat room...

    1) Get yourself an IRC client. mIRC is a free download (30 trial but doesn't stop working from what I've been told) - http://www.mirc.com

    2) Connect to a quakenet server. Look up mIRC docs on this. A local quakenet server is "uk.quakenet.org". See http://www.quakenet.org for more.

    3) Join "#ctyizens". That's the room. Look up docs on this if you need to.

    4) Talk/Enjoy.

    5) Repeat ad infinitum.

    If there's anything I left out please add it. This is not a chatter thread so don't use it for that or your post will be deleted.

    If someone has an mIRC/IRC tutorial handy then post a link.

    The point of this chat room is to try encourage actual chatter in a more chat oriented environment instead of on the forums. This is not intended to replace the forums, not in the least bit, but there is too much simple banter here. The chatroom offers a far more appropriate environment.

    I'll accept simple queries on here and only on the topic of the chat room. No off topic and no "banter". Instant ban for breech of this and anything else that's inappropriate and I'm unable to think of right now.

    I keep getting a "connection refused" message when I try to connect to the UK Quakenet server. Can anyone help?

    Quakenet was experiencing some *ahem* technical difficulties

    Try blueyonder.uk.quakenet.org port 6667

    Yeah, that still won't work.

    ign.ie.quakenet.org should be quiet at the moment. shouldnt have any problems there

    Yeah, that still won't work.
    It could be a user error or a network problem

    Wasn't there already a #ctyi?

    That channel has *coughs* Nothing to do with CTYI. :p

    But seriously. Just use #ctyizens. This was discussed and chosen for a reason. I say no more on the matter.

    There is a better way, and a simpler path to enlightenment

    Firstly, direct your Internet interpretation devices, or "browsers" to www.boards.ie/chat*

    Secondly, the window which opens will have a shallow triangle which contains a small I like object, or "cursor" Click there, and then type /join #ctyizens

    Thirdly, if you wish you can type /nick _____ to have a designation in this prime are of communication

    And there you have it

    *If this step fails, get mIRC. It's probably easier.

    In mIRC... alt+O ... The first section is called "Connect" goto the "Firewall" subsection (last one in connect).

    Firewall support -> both.
    Protocol -> Socks 5
    hostname -> proxy.dcu.ie
    Click ok.

    It should work then.
    The timing out is because of DCU's firewall.

    i thought we got a trust last year when all us leet res freshers joined?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

    I meant that CGI-IRC that Raphael posted. :)

    Redbrick has a trust and probably DCU as a whole. I've never seen someone getting G-Lined from proxy.dcu.ie. So yeah, you're right in that regard.

    Quakenet dont give out trusts for any CGI:IRC client.

    Anyone got any links to a CGI:IRC client for quakenet that doesnt get regularly G-Lined?

    If ye're using Firefox (which ye SHOULD be, but that's a separate discussion), download Chatzilla (google) which is a handy IRC plugin.
