remember all the fuss about the 21 gun salute for president robinson, they were supposed to use blanks, but the ammo was left over from before the foundation of the state. they reckon some shells landed in the dublin mountains.

LOL, yeah there is no possible way the Army would use live ammo for any 21 gun salute. The potential for destroying somebody and/or somthing would be huge. That goes for rifle shots as well as artillery. Plenty of stories of dummy morters landing in dodgy places but nothing confirmed that I know of. Tear gas was left lying around the Curragh a year or two ago but that was the yanks ;)

    Speaking of slight misses

    http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=227410
A National Guard F-16 fighter jet on a nighttime training mission strafed an elementary school with 25 rounds of ammunition, authorities said Thursday. No one was injured.

The range has been used by the military since the end of World War II, long before this area of south Jersey was developed.

Eh... there is no excuse for strafeing a building way off the fireing range. US Military GPS is extreamly accurate and the pilot should and the ground control should have known he was way off. Imagine if it had been a day time exercise...

True, but how far does 3.5 miles look, when your 7000 feet in the air? I blame machine error, esp as the cheapest contrator was proberly used to make the plane.

All these stories are just the usual day to day american action. I mean in Iraq , what are the figures for friendly fire deaths and injuries? And they constantly blow up civ houses with the most advanced guided bombs in the world.

    Children shouldnt play with matches.....

Belive it or not it is not as bad as in the first gulf war of 1991.The hit ratio was 11 to 1.IE it required 11 smart bombs" to destroy one target .Now it is down to 3 to 1.Friendly fire has always happened, does happen and will always hpppen.Despite he best attmpts to prevent it happning.
Murpys law of combat."freindly fire, isnt", Still holds true.
It is an unavoidable thing in war that civilians will suffer and mistakes willl be made.No doubt it doesn't help much if your local friedly freedom fighters decide to take over the mosque,or hospital,or whatever in your neighbourood and start using that as a firebase.
