    Hi!

I'm in my third year in college studying computing , I've got a National Certificate so far from it and passing this year shouldn't be much of a problem.
But I'm starting to get worried lately about the fact that I'm a 20 year old and have never had a job :( Absolutely nothing.....
I've been suffering REALLY badly with shyness most of my life, so I always came up with excuses to not get one, telling myself that it would interfere with studying  but I was just to afraid to meet other people.
Thankfully, I seem to be coming out of that phase and coming out of my shell, but what can I do about a job? I live in Athy so my options are fairly limited.
Can anyone suggest a possible a job that doesn't require work experience?

something that wont interfer with your college studies?
    waiting tables?
    pizza chef?
    working in a local spar?
    (see: tesco)
    (see: superquinn)

    be a pro poker player:)

I wouldn't worry about it too much though, send out a CV with your qualifications and studies and you will be fine. Maybe a job will let you come out of your shy shell and you will be interacting with people and you will get to meet new people etc. If you're still in studies, go with a job you can give up without upsetting the employer or yourself like as mentioned, Spar etc.

At 20 no one expects you to have experience. They expect you to know nothing and make lots of mistakes. Don't worry about it you've years to gain experience and meet people. Best place to meet lots of people is to work in a pub, and/or join a club. Try some vountary work. You'll get experience and meet people. Looks great on your CV too.

    Always the dream...... ;)

Thanks for the assurance though, this is something that was worrying me a lot, especially with the summer coming up. I'll try for somewhere like Petits or Superquinn, surely they aren't expecting to see much experience . But voluntary work sounds like a great idea for filling a sparse CV :)

I'd say that's the smallest advantage of charity work, you will feel good and you are also likely to meet allot of kind, down to earth people working with you and also who you will be working with.

it looking good on your CV, as in, you will get allot more satisfaction then simply having a good looking CV:)

Working in a pub/nightclub WILL interfer with your studies. I say this, as your body will get into a routine of late nights, late mornings, and then you may find it hard getting back into a routine for college during the week.

Get a job fudgepacking in Tesco's, or Superquinn, etc. Not 5 evenings a week, tho, as you'll still need time for study, etc.

Its the work forum, so the primary issue is getting a job with no experience.

Are you doing the computing and business course in GMIT? From your first post I'm guessing thats it. Its a good course. I finished there last year.

If you want to build confidence you should test yourself. I was kinda shy in the past so I did barwork. Learning how to handle abusive customers and also chatting and having craic with the staff will soon bring you out of your shell. You'll also learn about being assertive with managers.

Yeah, have to agree. Everyone I know that worked in a pub or nightclub got sucked into the culture of these and ended up doing little else. Waiting tables is a good alternative. It's hard work, but you deal with a lot of people and usually your coworkers are young students. Voluntary work is also a good option. Looks fantastic on the cv, especially if you are due to be a new grad.

What area will you be looking for a job in... think of something like call centre work (Minimum wages for your sole... but work and a reference all the same)...
