Can anyone advise how to increase the resolution when capturing my video from my camcorder. The highest I can get is 720x576. Does the resolution depend on the capturing software or the hw?

    Thanks,
    andre

what resolution does your camcorder record at?

720x576 sounds like dvd res @ widescreen so your cam may not go higher

    My cam is a Panasonic-PV-GS12

    http://www.easycamcorders.com/content/Quick-Review-Camcorders--Panasonic-PV-GS12.htm

And the 720... I just got from windows explorer dimension column next to the file I saved the caputre in. Anyway what ever the numbers are saying the quality of what I see is not great. Whould it improve if I get a better sw? Any advise? Also I'm not recording in wide screen format.

what formnat are you saving in?
if its avi change it to mpeg 2 if you can

its just a regular camera so the resolution is not gonna be higher than 720x576
are you using usb1.1 or 2.0 or firewire,
a low transmision speed could degrade the data.

it's an avi and I'm using a firewire. However did you say the common resolution is what I have?

resolution is correct, the camera records in ntsc format so that matches up,
if your using firewire then your pc is doing the encoding so unless its a g5 mac or encoding at about 0.1x [10mins encoding for 1 min video] then an avi will turn out crap unless its a raw avi, 100megs per minute or therabouts...

try setting the encoding settings higher so it takes more time or encode to a diff format, mpeg for example , which isnt so processor heavy

720x576 looks fine, and the raw avi will look a bit crap, but should look a bit below dvd quality when you encode it into mpeg2 or similar. This cant be done on the fly, as it takes hours, unless you have specialist hardware.

The avi's will take up about 10 gigs an hour

the video compresion say: DV Video Encoder -- type 1
and it takes about a minute or two to encode a minute
I guess I have to figure out how to change the compression rate right? I'm using a ULEAD video studio 6 capure sw. Im not sure if this is the best or close to best option to go with. Can you recommend a good sw to use?
