Stalling Problem

I need some help/info on some trouble I'm having with a new graphics card I recently had installed, an nVidia TI 4800. It tends to stall during games for 6 to 10 seconds, with the background music and sound skipping. The computer I'm running it on is a Compaq Presario 5443, 256mb ram, and 1.8 ghz processor.
I've tried bringing the hardware acceleration down 4 notches in the troubleshooting area, no change. I’ve updated the card with the latest drivers, and downloaded an nVidia update from the Compaq site, and I'm still having the same trouble.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :)

This might be obvious, but did you install the specific driver cd that came with the card? Windows has its own very very basic driver for that card, which will not run games well at all. If so, you need to install the proper drivers.

I've installed the original cd drivers yep. I think I might need more RAM, cause my computer was a bit slow to begin with, thanks for all your help.
