DVD-RW/Slave cable problem !

I just put a dvd burner under my exsiting CD-RW drive, I have the pins set to slave on the DVD writer and I didn't touch the CD-RW drive, I connected the power and the block of pins cable (slave) in to the back of the dvd.

I have power in the dvd drive, in my computer I can see it as drive H but I don't thinks it in right as the slave cable coming from the MB is about 2mm short and it's just about reaching into the dvd drive.

Could it be that not all the pins are not connected ? and if so how do I make the slave cable that 2mm longer ?

You haven't said what it actually wrong with the drive.
Is there anything wrong with it?

No it's a brand new drive that I got off sailorboy, I put one in a mates pc tonight and it's grand made a copy of Intermission and all...

I think it's the cable my self, it's not long enough.

try running it as a slave off the hard disk.

Sorry ranDom_tAsk what I meant to ask was: what exactly is the problem you have?

Anyway, _typical_ situation is as follows:
    - You probably have two IDE cables coming from the motherboard.
    - Each of these can have 2 IDE devices (1 master - 1 slave)
    - You can either A) set the jumpers on each device to determine which is master and which is slave or B) set the jumpers on each device to CS (cable select) so whichever one is at the end of the cable is teh master, the other one is slave.

I recently had a situation where I had two hard drives and two optical drives. Whatever the reason the only way I could get all four visible was to have one HDD and one ODD per IDE chain (i.e. not 2 HDDs on the one chain, and not 2 ODDs on the other chain)

And make sure the jumper settings are correct on all your IDE devices.
Oh and make sure your BIOS isn't disabling either the Primary slave, secondary master or secondary slave.

    hth,
(sorry if it didn't make sense or help, the Z-cars are chasing me)

Well ok, you don't have to have the drive in the bay; Place the drive close enough to the motherboard so that you can connect the power and IDE cable up with enough length. Don't let the drive fall around the place though. Then check it: - if it works - then likely it is the cable; If it doesn't work - then likely it's not the cable.

Cheers causal, I took it out and tried it and it's fine. But I'll need a new master cable I think as it too short, would I get one in Maplin handy enough ?

Also how long should it take to record a DVD ?

    Thanx :)

Maplin sell IDE cables Bring you existing cable with you and make sure the new one will reach, and has the correct connectors.
Also see if your mates or anyone has one they're not using, or check an old PC.

How long it takes to burn a DVD depends on the your drive and the disc.

    Typical values:
Your drive: can burn -+R at 8x or 16x
Your drive: can burn -+RW at 4x

Your dvd +R can be burned at 8x or 16x
Your dvd +RW can be burned at 2x or 4x

Typical disc is 4.7GB about 120 minutes video

So to burn a full 120 min disc at 8x will take 120/8 = 15 minutes
So to burn a full 120 min disc at 2x will take 120/8 = 60 minutes

    hth,
