winAMP -v- Windows Media Player

I prefer using winamp for almost every reason except WMP uses all my 5.1 speakers to play music, winamp only used the Stereo and subwoofer.
Cant find any way for winamp to do this, so im switching between then. Music sounds really amazing using the midtone speaker and rear speakers too.

    Anyway, thoughts?

In Winamp 2 and 3 using DirectSound should enable multichannel output. More info here .

In Winamp 5 the faq says you need to install a 3rd party plugin.

Using winamp5 and there's no need for a third party plugin.

Open up your sound effects manager (it's in control panel on my machine), set the profile to generic or room instead of none.

Weirdly, WMP uses all the speakers regardless of this setting being set to none but winamp does need it set to something :)

I use winamp over WMP basically for the enqueue option, that and playlists are easier managed in winamp imo.

Winamp is much better than WMP player. I find its easier to find my way around with it.

But I mainly use Itunes now, which is better than the other 2.

Download KB5.1 if you want winamp to use all your speakers.

Jaegers method will only work on certain soundcards.

I'm an entrenched Winamp user, but I still prefer Winamp3 to Winamp5... the Wasabi interface, multiple-playlist support... it was brilliant. Yes it had a high memory footprint, but if you had a half-decent machine you were grand. Too many moaning b*stards with 500MHz PIIIs brought it down...

You can try getting a winamp plugin. Jut saerch for :

    Wave 5point1 Output alpha test

and oldversion.com should still have winamp3 for those that want/need it :)

Neither, the best mp3 player out there is quintessential player. kicks ass...

as for winamp v wmp, winamp for playlist and mp3 play back. wmp for everythng else.

No Matter what music/media player i try i always go back to winamp, lots of features, very fast to update file info in library, great support for different music/video codec's. winamp5 all the way:D

I use WMP because of the album art and good ripping functions..... can winamp display album art? Havent used winamp in about 3 years....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

Most of the time I just want to listen to music.. I couldn't care less about album art. I like Winamp because it just sits up in the title bar. I have it set to 'always on top' so its always there but it doesn't get in the way.

the latest winamp is very processor hungry, especially if you like to listen to music while playing games. I'd advise to use winamp3 with a plugin for 5.1/dts if you need it.

I have it running in the background with a 5.1 plugin running and it uses 2%-3% every couple of seconds. It has no effect when playing games.

I'd go media player classic for all vids and one off mp3's , the load time + memory footprint is sooo much smaller than any new WMP, and i think the interface is better too.. , then itunes for browsing lib/playlists...
