According to the book, "It's Raining Frogs and Fishes,"
by Jerry Dennis, lightning bolts travel at speeds up
    to 93,000 miles per second.

    You lied.

Jerry is Exaggerating again, he does that just to sell his books. Lightning takes around a day and a half.

    Really? Cool...:o

Back to the point, no, they're not always that fast. I was waiting about 8 working days for a laptop. Depends what your getting i suppose. The likes of desktops would be put together quicker then laptops maybe, dunno.

    What'd u get?

I thought as much. "Sometimes even the blind chicken gets the corn" as Jesus said on the cross, (I think??)

Got one for the brother, Dimension 5000, 17inch flat panel, p4 3.00, 1 gig of ram, 160 gig hd, €870. Best deal they've had in a while for desktop for that cash.

Sales have dropped because more people are custom building,
So about 20 guys built your machine

Lol. i can just imagine 20 people queuing up in a line each holding one component, majestically swirling around each plonking their component in and piroetting away gently. It brings a tear to my eye.

About 20 people did build the machine, but that's how an assembly line works, Mr Ford.

lol, i would have thought ordered would be assigned to 1/2 people or whatever and they make it at the workstation. hmp, i could be wrong. Thats how it worked when i was operating in a computer factory

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 425 ✭✭WillieDH

you must have gotten a cancellation, i.e. someone who ordered the same spec but cancelled !!

DELL always delay shipment to get a better price from component price downs

There's an intel price down for vendors on 2nd April so bet there will be no shipments this week !

You most certainly did not receive a "rejected" model ..that is what the factory outlet store is for...
The factory is a pretty amazing place..the trucks literally drive up to one end with parts..and out the other end comes completed pc's ..there are no shelves of completed computers ...its a "just in time" system of incredible efficiency...if it wasnt..the Limerick plant would have been closed a lonnng time ago.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

Yep I have to say the are uber efficent.

I got a tour of the plant a few years ago...looks mega and the fact that the don't even buy the parts until there being put into the system is amazing.

If there are no problems at all, a pc can go from bits in various boxes, to assembled and out the door in as little as 2 hours. It doesn't usually happen that fast though. Towards the end of the month they usually ship in less than 24 hours, however Credit Clearing can take AGES, and the you've got the muppet delivery men who sometimes like to give the box a tour of Ireland before actually delivering it to your house... Parts shortages can cause major delays, and of course the sheer volume: Dell can ship up to one million units in a quarter from the limerick plant...

Most of the time the entire PC is actually assembled by one person, helps with Quality control as they can track it back to the person if a shoddy job has been done. Who would want a job where all you do it click in memory chips etc, all-day-long... no no no... would drive anyone up the walls.

WHAT?!! They sold you a PC at prevailing market price and then neglected to keep upgrading it as better parts became available?

I'm reminded of Homer Simpson buying a computer:"So this is the best computer in the world and always will be, right?"

When I saw the thread title 'Dell Faster than Lightning' I thought it was referring to the speed of the PC as opposed to the delivery schedule. It may have been a quick delivery but my experience of Dell is that they are under powered, over priced and over rated.

And to clarify my negative attitude towards Dell, in the past 4 months we've had to replace the motherboards on 6 PCs, all of which were only 1-3 years old. Out of the total number of PCs in the lab, that represents a failure rate of about 30% within 3 years, which is not vewry good.

On top of that, they're just plain slow. Transcoding a DVD on my GX260 (P4 2.26GHz, 768M RAM) takes about 2 hours. It used to take about 45 minutes on my Athlon 1.1GHz system at home.

Not good value for money either. €121 for 256M RAM, €169.40 for a 16x DVDRW, €35.09 for a floppy drive! Their upgrades are not only a joke, they're a disgrace.

I wouldn't recommend Dell to anyone.

    I bought a Dimension 5000, 19" ultrasharp FP with DVI, P42.8GHz HT, 1GB DDR2 400MHz memory, 160GB HD, DVD-ROM / CD-RW, €100 off and free delivery for €833.29....

and bought a NEC 3520A DVD+/- RW etc for €58 from komplett!

Not quite sure. Same OS applies to both my work and home PC, about the same memory too, the one at home had 1G, but was no different with 512M in it previously.

I think the bottleneck in performance on Dells is the mobo. If you buy your own components and self-build, then you would probably pay €100-150 for the mobo. I'm sure Dell probably only spend about €20 on theirs so the design and layout may not be optimal.

With the spec that's in a Dell it shouldn't be as crap as it is, but it is. There were config problems when it arrived, like the BIOS was 6 months old and had 2 updates on Dells website for it that they hadn't bothered to install. The OS was Win2000 and had some issues that I can't remember now. The IDE drives were configured in PIO and not DMA mode.

It's properly configured now, but it's still dog slow compared to other PCs I have and use.

As already mentioned Dell ship machines faster coming up to month end and even quicker coming up to quarter end.
