Gear Overhaul

Well, there be a bit of money coming my way, assuming all goes to plan. I'll be selling my Ibanez and MG anyway, and if I get a decent opportunity I'll sell my Squier and my Ashdown and completely overhaul my setup. :)

I was thinking of a new bass, a new bass rig and a new guitar.

All going well I should have the guts of two grand to play with in total, counting money for sellfing stuff and savings and a big ass chunk of money coming my way for teh birthday and various other reasons. :D That's a whole lot of money but I want to really maximise it to get the best setup I can.

I've pretty much set my heart on a Gibson SG for the guitar, and I'm waiting to see a nice second-hand one turn up at a decent price as someone got a deposit on the one I was looking at.

The bass I was thinking either a Warwick Streamer or a Ric 4001. Both are on Chris's site for lovely prices, but at the moment I really can't pick between them. I could use the finesse of the Streamer, but that growl from the Ric is soooo tempting!

I'm pretty clueless on bass rigs. I'm not sure whether I should go for a head and cabs type setup or a combo with maybe an extension cab. If I get the above I don't have a whole lot of money left to play with, let's say about five hundred or so. What would be a good setup for five hundred? It must be giggable, and I've got plenty of time to think, as I most likely won't be doing anything about this until the summer, except maybe the electric if I get a chance.

I might also get another bit of money if I can find a month's work for the summer, so maybe budget for seven hundred for the amp, though that might be a little too optimistic. Ah, what the hell, it's all about dreaming anyway! :D

Any advice on teh amp or observations on the gear would be welcome. Also, anyone who can link me to better deals on the guitar or bass, or a good deal on the amp, will be my new friend. :)

    Thankees,
    Dave

Thanks man. Roughly how much does that SG translate to in yoyo's? I'm not big on the BTB's and I think I'm going to stick with a four-string anyway, so I'm still looking at the Streamer and the Ric. I'm not sure what the Gallien Kruegers are like. I've never played one. I was thinking more along the lines of Ashdown, Ampeg, maybe SWR. I've played and liked their stuff, but I could use more advice on it.

Well, there was someone ranting about the GK's over on GigSmart. Seem to be pretty cool but I've never played one so I don't know.

The SG is €675 + shipping + import tax if you get stung for it. Pretty nice price all the same!

That is a nice price. It'd come to about eight hundred all told I would think. Will keep it in mind, though if Chris gets a nice one in anytime soon I'll be snapping it up quickly. :)

I was thinking I'd buy all second-hand. I'd get much better gear for my money. Might even stretch the budget to a Standard on the SG if I go that way. :)

I think I'll wait for the Doc's advice on the bass gear. He seems to know more about it than most around here. That's the main thing. I just have to find the money for an SG now and decide between two lovely basses.

I say the Ric all the way!

As for amplification, I use a Trace Elliot myself, and it's a great amp.

Yeah, not sure the Ric would have the finesse for jazz though, and I play in a jazz band at the moment so...

On a funky note, an SG standard on Ishibashi is 135000 yen. That equates to 980 euro and 79 cents! Less than half of what it is here! Methinks I'll be seeing how that plays out. The import would be a bitch though to be honest. I'm fairly sure it'd bring it over the Thomann price for the same instrument.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye, it'd be about €1300 for it. If you get done for the import, which you probably will be :(

Oh the Ric will do methinks. You get some tone out of one of those. It's a pity Chris sold that BC Rich Eagle he had, I'd certainly love to have that as part of my collection.

I agree with It Wasn't Me, a Ric is not a subtle beast. It's like using a BC Rich Stealth for Jazz...

Yeah, would make for an interesting sound though... It's only 1133 on Thomann, and I'm sure I could find it cheaper second-hand if I looked around for it.

If that's not a wager, I don't know what is!

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying that it's very very wrong. It'd be like using a Daisy Rock for death melodic Norwegian fairy metal.

I'd say that could be done too, those Daisy Rock guitars don't look too bad at all. Although I get the idea that "Wrong" in this case means aesthetically unsuiting. Let go of those preconceptions.

TBH, I was thinking more of getting a jazz type tone. An Air Norton and a Tone Zone aren't the jazziest sounding pickups.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

No, the AN & TZ are in the Virgin... The Stealth shall have the Air Norton and Evolution!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Oh ffs. Apologies for not remembering every pickup in every guitar you have. Jesus. And the Evo definately isn't jazz.

Liking the look of this muchly:

    Any opinions on it?

i would definitly want a louder amp than that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Yeah, but little things like cash prohibit it. Unless I can find a good second-hand one I'm likely sticking around the 100watt mark.

I play a Warwick Streamer and I love it dearly. I find it quite versatile but the standard pickup in it isn't great. But of course you can change that.

That's the big active MEC humbucker, yeah? What would be a good swap for it do you think? I love the tone I've heard from it. I haven't played one in ages though. If I remember correctly the neck is very slim, isn't it? I love a slim neck profile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Nah, you're grand. I'm not big on the Dolphins meself.

THe Dollphin's neck is extremely slim. One reason I personally don't like it.Tone to die for off of it though!

It's nice and slim yes. The pickup isn't active. Well at least mine isn't. I don't know about a swap though, I've never seen a pickup that will fit the gap. Fooking huge gap.
