voip + wireless broadband

I'm considering using VOIP. Thinking of Skype, but would consider others. I've had an ADSL broadband connection for a year now. Would consider Ripwave (other wireless broadband available?) for VOIP it I thought it was good enough. Want to drop the €ircon line: I'd save 60 quid a month without the Eircom line.

Has anyone here gone down this route in Ireland? What sort of quality are you getting for voice calls and what sort of speeds on wireless broadband? I'm in Dublin west so don't expect coverage to be a problem. Would have considered NTL if they supplied the service.

    TIA

Was using Skype over WiFi and ripwave. have to say the call quality was only okay.

Definitely okay if skype to skype, but when using Skype out, probably not good enough for dependable use.

I did however, have a shockingly bad Ripwave connection most of the time.

I use skype for machine to machine over the net. Sounds fine for me on wireless network. But you could leave the phone there and ring using www.telestunt.ie

Even if you drop eircom, your still going to have to pay line rental for ADSL.

I didn't mean having a wireless network in the house using 802.11x. If I use something like Ripwave, there's no telephone line involved, and hence no line rental charge. Ripwave's basic service is a bit more expensive per month (40 than 30 from UTV) and there is a 150 euro installation charge. So I'd have to be looking at using it for at least a year to make the decision cost effective. But quality of service is important too. Then again many people are using cordless phones and the quality of some of those isn't really that good.

I'll check out to see what other wireless broadband alternatives to Ripwave are available in my area.

There was a supplement in last Sunday's Business Post with an article on VoIP. If you can't get it yourself (try local library or your company's marketing department for their batch of Sunday papers), I can post them to you if you want to PM me.

I use SKYPE for machine to machine via IBB Breeze.

Was talking to a friend of mine in Czech republic who was also on BB and you'd swear he was in the next room.

Crystal clear connection...and he was using a modified CB microphone. Very good screening on the cable makes a big diff.

SKYPE Out is 'OK'...it's cheap and handy. Wouldn't rely on it 100%. Still handy to have a landline.

If you're doing computer to computer, you can't do better than teamspeak.

    www.goteamspeak.com

All the gaming geeks use it. IOL / Esat host a server (called chatterbox) in Ireland. You can have a higher than telephone quality conversation (you choose the quality level depending on your bandwidth).
