I picked La Haine. I liked COG as well but I loved the way La H. shows a side of France rarely if ever seen in films before and I've lived in France so I could relate quite a bit.

I'd have to go with La Haine as well.

City of God was well made, but it was still pretty much a standard gangster movie.

La Haine had a really tight time frame which worked really well.

I prefered La Haine in a number of ways - plotline, cinematography, etc

I saw it much younger than COG though - thanks to Network 2's late night, midweek uncut foreign files a few years ago. So it probably left a bigger impression on me.

Oooh looks like I'm the deciding vote for now!

I chose it for the same reasons as both Simu and MYOB!

And I love it's structure, it's so original.

    Was that a rhetorical question?

Have to say City of God marginally myself as it showed the good humour of the Brazilian people in general despite their years of suffering in abject poverty.

Must actually root out "La Haine" from my video collection though and have another look at it.

I own both on dvd and have seen them both 3+ times and i would have to say that I think CoG is a better movie for so many reasons ... but Im 2 lazy and 2 tired to go into them.

La Haine definetly! I've only seen COG once and I don't think I'd be bothered watching it again tbh.

the version of la haine i have has white subtitles on mostly white back ground rendering the film impossible to watch.
because of this i ahvent been able to watch it,
so city of od until i can get a legible version of haine,
or someone french to translate it lol
