The worst diet is the heartbreak diet - 2 years ago I lived on 3 large skinny latte a day for about 2 months and was doing a lot of walking - lost about 21lb - not to be recommended.

Got to be the Atkins diet. You'll lose a few pounds. Then you'll get colon cancer, and get your intestines removed and a colostomy bag put in place. And then you'll lose even more weight!

Err, no - I really did loose all that weight, admitidly I also had a stomach ulcer at the time...is a very stupid diet to live on but I was coping with the break up of a 5 year relationship at the time.

In more general terms the Atkins diet has to be the worst diet - causing ketosis on purpose, the bad breath, the potential health risks...need I go on..

Well it would make sense alright since his stomach would just shrink if he didnt eat anything.

I was just quoting the sunday culture anyway.

In my opinion there are no stupid diets, if it works for one person then it cant be a stupid diet. There's not one diet in the world that would work for everyone

The underlying fact of the Aitkins diet is not that it is a low card diet.. The true reason for its effectiveness is that fact that it is a very high protein diet. It has been found that a high protein diet surpresses your hunger but making you feel satified, thus you eat less. The reason why the diet is actually so effective is that you are eating less calories without realising it.

I realised this about 2 months ago. Have been eating what I want really but staying away from Pasta, Bread, Rice, Potatoes, Sweets and Fizzy Drinks. When I have my dinner I will have large portions of meat (normally fish or chicken) and alot of vegetables. I have dropped nearly 2 belt sizes since Christmas.

    Still stupid though!

Those two in the first post are intended to be followed permanently; not just for a short period to lose weight.
Steve Jobs used to be a fruitarian.

Stop knocking Atkins and other low-carb methods of eating until you fully understand how they work. The GI-diet that is in fashion at the moment, is essentially a relaxed Atkins, with good carbs allowed back in. And it's the most sensible way of eating I've ever seen.

Plenty fresh produce, very little sugar and refined foods. What's bad about that?

BTW I lost 13kg using Atkins over a year ago and I've haven't put a pound of it back on. I also cleared up my irritable bowel syndrome when I stopped eating wheat. I really do challenge anyone to tell me that choosing to eat low-carb was not good for me.

What about that Kellogs diet to drop a jean size? The one where you eat 2 bowls of cereal a day and then have one big meal.

Sure one bowl of cereal is hardly enough just as breakfast! There was even a thread on here recently about how many bowls of cereal people could eat in one go

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

What!? More that one bowl? Thats playing cereal god. Gimme me one bowl of flakey corn any day.

    My philosophy

not eating total shi*e + excercise = no need for a fancy diet

(please no one say that the "not eating rubbish" is a diet :D )

worst diet regime= slim fast plan.

on a side note is it possible to be vegitarian and do the atkins diet?

It is, there's a chapter in the book on it, but I'd imagine it's harder, far harder

Yeah I have to agree, I think that Kelloggs diet is downright stupid, especially considering the sugar and salt content of a lot of cereals.

I just think that a diet that says, "You can eat a lb of meat but u cant have an apple" is kind of stupid too.

You can have apples later on in the diet. Why don't people read about the whole thing instead of just focussing on what goes on when you start the diet?

    dam that was quick! :P
Well the only thing im going by is what the body actually does with carbohydrates and fats, but lacking your body of carbs i harmful to your liver etc

Not to be smart, but proof?

Seriously, Atkins only rules out carbs at the start, once you've lost some weight and are into good eating habits, you can start introducing them back in. I personally still don't eat wheat, cereals etc as they cause me stomach pain and acid reflux. But I do eat fruit and veg. I just choose to avoid the "bad" carbs.

Do you have evidence to support this?

Besides, you only go off carbs for the first 2 weeks, and even then only seriously obese people are supposed to do this 2 week period. After that, the focus is on replacing highly refined carbs like sugar and white flour with wholefoods like brown bread, brown rice, fruit, vegetables etc.

Well instead of having fruit etc digested, (which are rather easy to digest because of there high citric acid or the equivelant.) the body has to digest large amounts of meant or proteins.. This means that your liver is on over drive for those 2 weeks. It has been proven that the diet is harmful to your body.

The best way is to have a healthy, balanced diet with exercise and aim to lose weight slowly.... Crash diets will put you into starvation mode, you then drop your basal metabolism and even a few crackers will make you gain weight......

Anyone who regularily crash diets knows its harder and harder to do over time as your body is adapting to the "starvation" by slowing your metabolic rate to compensate.......

I personally think that the Atkins Diet is the worst ... My fiancee was on it & I made her stop because she started suffering from very bad headaches & stomach cramps!!

Be sensible when eating, get regular exercise... if your obese, just dont comform to a idealistic vision of beauty reinforced by tv and magazines!
