You should just learn to set it up yourself. I've never brought a guitar to a tech ever and people love the action on my guitars. It's really not that hard to do.

me too i do have to hit people to get me telecaster back... even if it was professionally set up it doesn't mean its right for u..just keep playin with it (the bass now  ) and you'll get it feeling and sounding perfect in no time...thats how all the greats do it!!!!

I have a vintage, for example, which i dont want to mess with myself. Simple set-up jobs can be done at home, but for something as "fragile" as a vintage i would rather go to someone who has more experience with that.

Alternatively i can always get Doc a six pack for the job. Right?

Get your experience on cheap guitars. TBH, if I had a vintage guitar, I wouldn't it hand off to someone who could turn out to be a monkey wearing a hat and a large coat!

You callin Doc a monkey with a hat and large coat? :D

I dont have a cheap guitar i could mess around with. I just have to find someone reliable for the job.

Now that you mention it.... :p

Slurms, don't mess around with the truss rod until you read everything you can. Messing around with string heights, intonation, etc will not permanently damage your bass. If you try it and it doesn't work, then bring it to a tech who'll make everything right again. But you could also learn how to set up your own instruments to your own tastes and still have that €30 in your pocket for beer :)

you encouraging a 17 year old to drink? shame on you! ill give it a fiddle but im not good with these things!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yes, drink, become one with your instrument. No, wait... :p

I wasn't good with those things either until I got out a screwdriver and took apart my guitar. Then I was forced to learn how to put it back together. You just get better by doing and reading.

And how did a 17 year old afford a musicman???

    By bootlegging booze, of course.

So what was the conclusion when we discussed this guy Derrick Nelson who's based near the Marlay (sp?) Park a couple of months ago?

I think John2 recommended him, iirc.

Aye, go to Derrick Nelson. His number is in the sticky at the top of the forum. His reputation is great. Giblet and Doctor J will vouch for him no doubt.

Slurms, if it's a real Musicman then call Derrick Nelson 014942741, if it's not check the instrument resources thread for set up guides. You should learn this stuff anyway, everyone who plays an instrument should know how it works.
